Let us explore some of the brief points this e-Magazine will touch upon:

  • Fluctuation in the aluminium price on the London Metal Exchange (LME)
  • Sharp rise in energy prices driving the European aluminium production cost
  • Disparity between demand and supply due to production curb in Europe and China and its impact on the downstream segment
  • The geopolitical tension in the region
  • Outlook for 2022 and long-term planning

Since the beginning of 2022, the price of aluminium on the London Metal Exchange has surged by around 15 per cent exceeding its all-time high, recorded in October 2021. While aluminium manufacturers have registered gains based on this pricing, industry analysts believe it will have a negative impact in the long run.

The sharp rise in energy prices has been affecting the European aluminium industry greatly. Energy is one of the most important components of any industry. As per the World Bank, since energy represents more than a third of production costs, the sharp rise in gas prices has a significant impact on company profitability, particularly in Europe, where natural gas prices have increased by nearly 550 per cent from December 2020 to December 2021.

The strong demand for aluminium in Europe and the Chinese production curb is another problem affecting the European aluminium industry. Aluminium prices are reaching new highs for European consumers due to rising energy costs and production cuts, which have worsened metal shortages in the power, building, and packaging industries. Energy prices increased dramatically in 2021, causing production curb.

The current geopolitical crisis and the increased number of sanctions have also affected the European aluminium industry, which in turn may affect aluminium production in Europe.

As a result, all of these limitations in primary aluminium production will affect the downstream segment. However, plants with integrated primary aluminium production should be less affected by the European production halt, although power prices will have a considerable impact.

European Aluminium Industry: Focus 2022

In this upcoming e-Magazine, the industry leaders will share their insights into all these crises and their impacts on the European aluminium market. They will also share their outlook for the rest of 2022 in light of further challenges the regional industry may face or how the industry will deal with the ongoing challenges.
