According to data published on Friday June 4 by Brazil’s economy ministry, alumina exports from Brazil in May 2021 declined after registering a hike in April. Exports dropped by 7.81% from the same period last year. The decrease in exports was due to lower shipments from Norsk Hydro’s Alunorte alumina refinery.

Brazil’s exports of alumina came in at 718,843 tonnes in May. The country had exported 779,769 tonnes in May 2020, Metal Bulletin reported.
On a month-on-month basis, alumina exports from Brazil reduced by 22.16% from 923,437 tonnes in April. In April, exports were up by 19.90% year-on- year from 770,149 tonnes due to higher volumes from Alunorte refinery.
In May, the revenue generated from alumina exports were $202.29 million. That was down by 10.67% year-on-year from $226.45 million.
Hydro Alunorte recently became the first alumina refinery in the world to achieve ISO 55001 certification. With the ISO 55001 certification, Alunorte now has seven international certifications on quality, health, safety, environment, assets, and social responsibility management systems, among others.
