Brazil’s aluminium output down 7.8% in August

Production stood at 111,600 tonnes in August, compared with 121,000 tonnes in the same month in 2012, according to figures released by Brazilian aluminium association Abal.
In the January-August period, production fell 8.3% in comparison to the same period in 2012, totalling 888,400 tonnes.
Domestic aluminium demand is expected to end 2013 with a 4.1% growth in comparison to the year before, driving up imports in the medium to long term.
“With curtailed production and increasing internal demand, Brazil is to become an importer of aluminium,” a company executive told Metal Bulletin.
In August, Alcoa announced it will temporarily curtail 124,000 tpy of capacity at its smelters in Brazil in response to low aluminium prices.
In July 2013, Brazil’s aluminium production stood at 110,800 tonnes.
