Brazil´s aluminium imports surge as year's first Russian shipments arrive
Brazil´s aluminium imports rose by 61.2% year-on-year in October, mainly as a result of the year's first shipments from Russia.

Brazil imported 12,060 tonnes of aluminium in the month, compared with 7,477 tonnes in October 2012, according to figures from the country´s trade minister.

In January-October, imports amounted to 39,031 tonnes, from 37,101 tonnes in the corresponding period last year.

Russia was the main supplier of aluminium to Brazil, shipping 5,999 tonnes in the month – the first time the South American country has received Russian aluminium in 2013.

The material arrived in the port of Suape, in Brazil's northeastern state of Pernambuco, and generated revenues of $11.87 million.

Argentina, traditionally Brazil´s main international aluminium supplier, shipped 5,859 tonnes in October, compared with 7,477 tonnes in the same month a year ago.

The metal was mainly delivered in the port of Vitória, in Brazil´s Espírito Santo state.

In addition, 201 tonnes of aluminium arrived in Brazil from Italy in October. Last year, there was no similar trade.

Local market participants were expecting an increase in imports as a material shortage is feared by some after announcements of production cuts and amid increasing demand.

Brazilian aluminium demand for 2013 is estimated at 1.4 million tonnes, between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes above output, which is forecast at 1.2-1.3 million tonnes.

Aluminium alloys, scrap

Brazil´s aluminium alloys imports saw a 2.6% increase year-on-year in October, as the country took in 5,693 tonnes of aluminium alloys, up from 5,548 tonnes in the corresponding month last year.

As in previous months, Argentina was the main supplier, shipping 3,315 tonnes last month.

Other countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe also exported material to Brazil.

India shipped 603 tonnes to Brazil in October, followed by Singapore (409 tonnes), Bahrain (349 tonnes), Taiwan (245 tonnes), the UAE (186 tonnes), the UK (158 tonnes) and Malaysia (121 tonnes).

Aluminium scrap also saw a sharp increase, totalling 5,905 tonnes in October 2013, up from 2,772 tonnes in the same month last year.

Saudi Arabia and Poland were the main exporters, sending 1,703 tonnes and 969 tonnes in the month, respectively.
