Both LME and SHFE aluminium lost some gains yesterday with the rebounding dollar; to trade under pressure today

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

The US dollar index rebounded from earlier lows on Thursday, after US data showed growth in the world's largest economy was stronger than expected in the fourth quarter. LME base metals traded mixed on Thursday and aluminium dropped 0.9%. SHFE base metals also saw mixed performance overnight and aluminium lost some 0.2%.

LME aluminium cash contract closed lower from previous day at US$ 1893 per tonne during the day’s closing yesterday. The three-month LME aluminium dropped close to 0.9% to finish Thursday at a session low of US$1,905 per tonne, as gloomy February manufacturing data in China hampered market sentiment. Better-than-expected US economic growth in the fourth quarter bolstered the greenback overnight, which is set to weigh on LME aluminium today, with most transactions likely occurring at US$1,890-1,920 per tonne today.

The LME aluminium opening stock decreased to 1219700 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 641950 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 577750 tonnes.

LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1917 per tonne.

SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange dropped to US$ 2039 per tonne today from US$ 2053 per tonne on February 28.

The most active SHFE May aluminium contract dipped 0.2% to end at RMB13,665 per tonne overnight. Social inventories of primary aluminium in China continued their growth as consumption has yet to pick up. The SHFE 1905 contract is expected to trade at RMB 13,610-13,710 per tonne today with spot discounts at RMB 80-40 per tonne against the March contract.

Higher inventories of primary aluminium weighed the SHFE 1904 contract, which dropped to a low of RMB 13,655 per tonne in the afternoon. It ended lower for the third consecutive trading day, at RMB 13,680 per tonne. The contract is likely to trade rangebound weakly tonight.
