Both LME aluminium and the most-traded SHFE August contract recovered losses yesterday; likely to trade higher today

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

The dollar continued to edge lower from recent highs and the euro was stuck near two-week lows on Thursday.  The US dollar index slid 0.05% to end at 96.735. Base metals ended mostly higher. LME aluminium climbed 1.15% and SHFE aluminium advanced 1.13%.

Thursday saw some bullish trading of LME aluminium and the contracts closed higher than the previous day.  Both three-month LME aluminium and the most-traded SHFE August contract recovered losses since last Friday during night trading as lower inventories and premiums in spot offers depressed confidence in shorts. LME aluminium closed 1.15% higher at US$1,809.5 per tonne. LME aluminium is likely to trade at US$1,750-1,850 per tonne.

LME aluminium

As on July 4, Thursday, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1771 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1771.50per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1794 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1794.50 per tonne; Dec 20 bid price stands at US$ 1903 per tonne, and Dec 20 offer price stands at US$ 1908 per tonne.

The LME aluminium opening stock dropped further to 971500 tonnes. Live Warrants totalled at 636500 tonnes, and Cancelled Warrants were 335000 tonnes.

LME aluminium 3-months Asian Reference Price is hovering at US$ 1790 per tonne.

SME and SHFE Aluminium Price Trend

The benchmark aluminium price on Shanghai Metal Exchange (SME) increased to US$ 2015 per tonne today from US$ 1999 per tonne on Thursday.

The most traded SHFE August contract extended overnight gains to finish the trading day 0.92% higher at RMB 13,775 per tonne yesterday. SMM data showed that social inventories of primary aluminium ingots across major consumption regions in China continued to fall this week, which drove bargain-hunting and short-covering after four consecutive days of declines. SHFE aluminium rose 0.87% to end at RMB 13,895 per tonne overnight. However, fundamentals will limit any upward room in prices in the short term. Lower costs for alumina and anodes, as well as a low consumption in July-August will continue to weigh on SHFE aluminium.  Today, the contact is likely to trade at RMB 13,700-13,900 per tonne.
