Ghana Bauxite Company Limited (GBC) has appointed Ecobank Ghana PLC to arrange up to USD 250 million in financing for its expansion programme, which aims to increase bauxite production and improve mining and logistics infrastructure. The parties signed the agreement in Accra on October 28, 2026. Ecobank will structure the proposed financing and coordinate participation from other banks and financial institutions. State’s tribal affairs department has consulted the state Advocate General (AG) on the possibility of expanding purview of gram sabhas to decide the fate of bauxite excavation atop Niyamgiri hills. The US Treasury Department has announced an array of new sanctions aimed at denying Iran even theoretical access to unrefined ore that could be used to produce aluminum, since conceivably aluminum could have “military uses.” The sanctions “blacklist” the acquisition of raw bauxite ore by Iran, as well as myriad other raw materials that could be refined. The sanctions also ban Iran from acquiring coal, gold, silver and platinum. Iran has reportedly been buying “relatively low amounts” of high purity ore, which for some reason is being dubbed “missile-grade”. According to China Customs, China imported 3.775 million mt of bauxite from Indonesia in May, down 30.9% YoY. The CIF price of Indonesian bauxite was USD 51.1/mt, a new monthly high so far this year. The CIF price of Indonesian bauxite was USD 43/mt before the Indonesian government hiked bauxite export tariff by 20% in June 2012. The CIF price, however, rose to near USD 49/mt afterwards and rose further to above USD 51/mt in May this year. Prices of imported bauxite are mainly subject to ore grade and sea freight. The sea freight for shipping bauxite from Indonesia and ports of Shandong is now stable at USD 11/mt.

The deplorable state of the Western rail line remains a major problem for bulk producers of manganese and bauxite, forcing them to use costlier road transport to haul their minerals and equipment, according to Dan Owiredu, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines. Speaking at the chamber’s 85th annual general meeting in Accra, he said despite Government assurances through major policy statements that the Western rail lines would be fixed, the promises have regrettably not been fulfilled. As a result, he added, Ghana Bauxite Company has completely stopped hauling goods by rail and solely transports its ore by the less cost-effective road mode, while Ghana Manganese Company uses the rail on a reduced operational level.
