Mozambique plans to invest around USD 126 million in a solar power plant to supply electricity to mining companies in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique, according to state news agency AIM. The project aims to strengthen electricity supply for mining operations and industries linked to mineral processing. XINFA Aurum Exploration (Fiji) Ltd has so far planted 12,000 pine seedlings at the Nawailevu Bauxite Mining as part of its rehabilitation program. In an interview yesterday, mine site manager Isireli Dagaga said their aim was to plant more than 35,000 seedlings at the 12-hectare land that had already been mined. "We have so far planted 12,000 pine seedlings since last year and we aim to plant as many as we can to cover the areas that have already been mined," Mr Dagaga said. A new prefeasibility study (PFS) on the Bauxite Hills project, in Queensland, has revealed that the project could deliver some two-million tonnes of direct shipping ore (DSO) product, over a 21-year mine life. Owner Metro Mining told shareholders on Tuesday that the DSO option allowed for the development of a mine at a lower capital cost and lower operating costs, compared with a mine producing a beneficiated bauxite product. Metro Mining has been granted an ASX trading halt in relation to the release of a Pre-Feasibility Study and Reserve statement for its Bauxite Hills Project in Queensland. Yesterday, the company estimated a JORC2012 Indicated Resource of 30.3 million tonnes of direct shipping ore (48.4% total AI2O3, 15.5% SiO2) for the BH6 deposit at the project. Total DSO resource (Indicated and Inferred) at the Bauxite Hills project is now 61.5 million tonnes at a grade of 49.9% total Al2O3, 12.2% total SiO2. In addition, bauxite quality results confirm the DSO product is suitable for export. Vessel-tracking data from IHS Maritime's Market Intelligence Network show six ship calls at Australian bauxite ports Weipa and Gove in January. Weipa bauxite mine will soon become the first mining site to adopt renewable energy thanks to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) who is providing the funds worth around $23.4 million for the revolutionary two-phased project. For the first phase of the project, ARENA will be shelling out $3.5 million which will be used to lay down 18,000 ground-mounted thin-film solar photovoltaics (PV) by First Solar and Ingenero. The Pahang State government has announced that the Jalan Gebeng bypass will only be used to transport bauxite and iron-ore to the port, effective from 4th February, 2015. The decision was taken after a discussion with 106 entrepreneurs related to the industry to solve the issue of dirty roads caused by the bauxite loaded lorries in the port and Gebeng industrial areas, said the state minister Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
