Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. Beating the slump in world aluminium market, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) is eyeing 10% growth in bauxite production by the close of this financial year. “By the end of 2015-16, the (bauxite) production is likely to be at the level of 6.3 million tonne (mt), a growth of 10%. The state Fire and Rescue Department, Pahang, confirmed that about 60% of the bauxite waste affected areas has been cleaned up since the cleaning works began on January 14. Its director Datuk Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin said cleaning was expected to be completed earlier than the scheduled date on February 14. "However, the Department of Environment will check and determine whether we still need to do more cleaning. The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry has approved the re-issuance of Approved Permits (AP) for bauxite-mining near Kuanatan area in Pahang. Its minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the APs to be given back to the mining sites were to enable the relocation of the 70,000 metric tonnes of bauxite to other areas.
