Rio Tinto’s planned USD 1.9 billion investment in the Kangwinan bauxite project is expected to support more than 1,300 construction jobs in Queensland, while helping secure the long-term future of its Weipa mining operations as existing sources of production approach the end of their lives. Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. In the bauxite segment, the company reports substantial growth in bauxite output in Q3 as well as the first nine months. In Q3, 2016, bauxite output totaled 3,211 thousand tonnes which recorded an increase of 2.7% from the last quarter. The Indonesian government has come up with a revised version of a regulation on coal and mineral resources activities in the country, which is likely to mark a change in the licensing regime bringing flexibility in mineral exports. According to a report from Malaysian Reserve, the moratorium on bauxite mining in Pahang may extend until 2018. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced inauguration a container terminal at the Port of Kamsar in Guinea on Wednesday. The terminal will enable EGA to import materials for constructing a new bauxite mine for its subsidiary Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC). Despite a world-wide sluggish market in metal sector, Navratna PSU Nalco has registered an impressive performance in the first half of 2016-17 fiscal. While bauxite mining was up by 23.6 percent at 35.08 lakh tonnes as compared to the corresponding six months of the previous financial year, the alumina hydrate production rose by 5.1 percent to 9.68 lakh tonnes compared to the corresponding period last year, an official release said. Indonesia has decided not to lift the ban on bauxite exports that it had imposed two years back, the country's minister said yesterday. This comes just days after the ministry had considered doing away with mining restriction in order to raise extra cash from the sector.
