Located on Western Cape York Peninsula, Kangwinan will add 20 million tonnes of annual bauxite production capacity, with first output targeted for 2029 and full production expected by 2032. Rio Tinto announced the production results for the third quarter of 2017. The company registered a four per cent increase in bauxite production in the third quarter. Rio Tinto’s bauxite production was 12.9 million tonnes for a second consecutive quarter. This was due to strong production at Weipa and Gove mine. “Gove production was 11 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2016 due to a planned production ramp-up associated with continued de-bottlenecking of capacity, whilst production at Weipa was up three per cent,” it said. Exton Cubic Limited filed a suit at the High Court for revoking company’s Nyinahini mining lease to undertake prospecting of bauxite in the Ashanti Region. A human rights, environmental and mining advocacy NGO named Wacam, has urged Ghana government not to grant license to any company to mine bauxite in the Atiwa Forest Reserve, on environmental grounds. The Government of India has set an auction target of INR 2 lakh crore worth of minerals in 2017-18. Out of this amount, only INR 48,000 crore worth of minerals including iron ore, bauxite, limestone, and manganese was auctioned in last six months.
