Ball Corporation, the world’s largest producer of aluminium cans, is the first can manufacturer to achieve the ASI Certification for its responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship of aluminium.

The ASI Performance Standard sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment, and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, indigenous people's rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Ron Lewis, President, Ball Beverage Packaging, EMEA, said, “We’re extremely proud to be the first beverage can manufacturer to achieve ASI certification. With its infinite recycling properties, aluminium is the fastest growing beverage packaging type in Europe, outperforming plastic, glass and other materials. Consumers concerned about the environment can have confidence in aluminium knowing that the metal is being sourced responsibly and that 75% of cans are collected and recycled in Europe.”

Kathleen Pitre, Chief Commercial and Sustainability Officer, Ball Corporation, added, “We are responding to a greater desire from consumers, across Europe and around the world, for genuinely sustainable and infinitely recyclable packaging solutions. We’re working closely with our customers to help them achieve their sustainability commitments and certified responsible sourcing practices are one aspect of how we deliver on that. Ball is hugely proud of our achievements in getting certified and we call upon the rest of the aluminium industry to follow the ASI Standards.”

Global Aluminium Industry Outlook 2020

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “ASI is delighted to congratulate Ball Corporation on their simultaneous dual ASI Certification for such a large number of facilities across many countries. This is a strong demonstration of their responsible production practices worldwide and of their commitment to ASI’s vision, which the company has helped to build from day one. The ASI Performance Standard Certification of these production facilities also strengthens the sustainability credentials of the aluminium beverage can, one of the most recognised consumer products in aluminium. The Chain of Custody Certification enables the company, given appropriate sourcing from upstream suppliers, to apply on-product labels.”
