BALCO adopts 'Bogie Open Bottom Rake' to enhance supply chain efficiency

The Indian primary aluminium producer, BALCO, has introduced its inaugural Bogie Open Bottom Rapid Discharge (BOBRNHSM2) Rake into its operations. This milestone signifies another stride towards fostering an effective and sustainable supply chain for acquiring vital raw materials.

BALCO is part of Vedanta’s Aluminium Business, a division of Vedanta Limited, India’s largest aluminium manufacturer.

However, this strategic incorporation will streamline the transportation of coal supplies via rail, eliminating the requirement for approximately 120 trucks per rake and greatly amplifying operational efficiency.

Part of the Indian Railways' General Purpose Wagon Investment Scheme (GPWIS), this initiative focuses on enhancing the distribution of coal resources to improve the domestic supply chain and lower logistical expenses. The BOBRN Wagon, equipped with Bottom Discharge Doors, expedites unloading, significantly reducing turnaround times. Optimising raw material acquisition cycles is pivotal for sustaining key industrial operations like those at BALCO.

Rail transportation presents numerous advantages compared to road transportation. With their substantial load capacity, railways alleviate pressure on road networks, leading to improved public infrastructure, enhanced road safety, and more efficient traffic management. Additionally, it is pivotal in promoting sustainability within industrial operations by significantly lowering the carbon emissions associated with material movement, thereby significantly contributing to sustainability endeavours.

These strategic innovations also play a pivotal role in elevating BALCO’s operational excellence. Implementing a digital tracking mechanism for Finished Goods (FG) vehicles has helped BALCO achieve the lowest-ever average turn-around-time (TAT) of 5.45 hours within its plant operations, a remarkable improvement over the previous 15-hour duration. The introduction of mechanised ingot loading, a first in the aluminium industry, has eliminated the need for human intervention, increased operational safety and conservation of significant time and resources, bolstered domestic dispatches, and boosted customer satisfaction.

The company has also undertaken several associated digital initiatives, such as the Finished Goods Control Tower, which incorporates a 24*7 live monitoring dashboard that offers real-time GPS tracking and speed monitoring, ensuring seamless operations around the clock. Centralised CCTV surveillance in railway yards further enhances security and monitoring capabilities. Such interventions have helped BALCO win gold in four categories at the Chapter Conventions of Quality Circle (CCQC), underscoring its commitment to excellence in logistics.
