On Friday, April 21, three-month LME aluminium opened at US$2,422 per tonne last Friday and closed at US$2,402 per tonne, a drop of 0.85 per cent. On the same day, the LME aluminium cash bid price and LME aluminium official settlement price shrank by US$21.50 per tonne or 0.89 per cent. This week, during April 17-21, all three Indian aluminium giants – NALCO, Hindalco, and Vedanta have elevated their aluminium ingot and aluminium products prices. Starting with NALCO, the company hiked its aluminium prices by INR 10,100 per tonne since April 7. On Wednesday, April 19, Rio Tinto, a leading Anglo-Australian mining group, announced its operational results for the first quarter of 2023, revealing an 11 per cent year-on-year decline and 8 per cent month-on-month drop in bauxite output to 12.1 million tonnes. The downfall took place due to the slowdown in Weipa’s operations caused by higher than average rainfall during the annual wet season. According to the Shanghai Metals Market, the average alumina spot price in China has closed the week ending April 21, 2023, with a drop of RMB 5 per tonne after remaining restrained for three consecutive days. Alcoa Corporation, the world’s eighth-largest producer of aluminium, said lower prices of ingredients they use for metal-making would eventually reduce the production costs in the second quarter of 2023, while aluminium demand would stay robust. Vedanta Aluminium has reportedly deployed Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices in fabric filters at its 2400 MW Thermal Power Plant to check carbon emissions. Fabric filters are special bag filters placed after electrostatic precipitators in chimneys. They collect particulate matter from the hot gas emitting from the power plant boiler system so it does not release into the atmosphere. The differential pressure between the bags plays a pivotal role in increasing the efficiency of the filters. According to the Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), China's domestic A00 aluminium ingot price has skyrocketed by RMB 170 per tonne to exceed RMB 19,000 per tonne after over two months. From RMB 18,860 per tonne on April 18 , the price leapt to RMB 19,030 per tonne on April 19, close to the price on February 8 when the Chinese domestic primary aluminium ingot price stood at RMB 19,060 per tonne. On Tuesday, April 18, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative certified Hindalco Industries Limited against the Performance Standard V2 (2017) for sheet rolling operation at the Taloja facility in the Raigad District of Maharashtra, India. This facility represents Hindalco’s third ASI-certified rolling plant after Mouda and Hirakud FRP, which received ASI Performance Standard Certification in February 2022 and December 2022, respectively. China’s unwrought aluminium and semis exports fall 15.4% Y-o-Y in 1Q2023; downtrend likely to continue
According to China customs data, Chinese unwrought aluminium and aluminium semis exports in March 2023 amounted to 497,000 tonnes, bringing the total exports of the first quarter to 1.38 million tonnes. The monthly exports in March’23 registered a year-on-year fall of 16.3 per cent, while the export volume in Q1 decreased by 15.4 per cent. In tandem with the drop in volume, the export value also fell by 23.8 per cent over a year to $4.94 billion in 1Q2023 ended March 31. In the entire year of 2022, China exported 6.6 million tonnes of unwrought aluminium and aluminium semis, up by 17.5 pent Y-o-Y.
