Hydro’s bauxite and alumina EBIT climbs 66% in Q3 2018 from same period last year, but production stood low

On releasing Norsk Hydro’s third quarter results, the company’s president and CEO Svein Richard Brandtzæg said, "The third quarter reflected our continued challenges at Alunorte and increased raw material costs, while higher aluminium and alumina prices, as well as strong Energy results, contributed positively. The market for aluminium is tightening, and we expect the 2018 global primary market in deficit." Underlying earnings before financial items and tax increased to NOK 2,676 million in the third quarter, up from NOK 2,446 million in the corresponding period last year, reflecting higher all-in aluminium and alumina prices, positive currency effects and strong contribution from the Energy business area. But continued production curtailment at the Alunorte alumina refinery and increased...

Indonesia’s alumina production is boosting with time. The sole smelter-grade alumina refinery in the country PT Well Harvest Winning (WHW) has reportedly hit the production of more than 2 million metric tonnes of smelter-grade alumina (SGA) since June 2016 or the month of SGA refinery’s maiden operation. WHW public relations executive Hen Roliya said that 98.5 percent of the production was exported and the remaining was for state energy holding PT Inalum, which needs SGA to produce their aluminium ingot. "We have been selling [our SGA] to Inalum, which is 1.5 percent of our production. [...] And there will be an increase of sales to Inalum in November to 28,000 metric tonnes of SGA," she told The Jakarta Post on Friday. Canada reduces US-made aluminium-can tariff for beer can shortage

According to brewing industry executives, Canada has taken a move to drop a 10 per cent duty on US-made aluminium cans and is proved to be good news for Canadian beer markets that are battling a shortage of tall cans. The aluminium products exempt from tariffs last week include cans that brewers have been struggling to keep in stock, said Luke Harford, president of trade association Beer Canada. Reuters reported in July that some Canadian breweries were scrambling to find aluminium cans. "It's very positive for us," said Harford. "The 473 ml tall cans are all purchased from U.S. suppliers and that particular can is one of the fastest-growing cans... particularly amongst small brewers." Last week, Canada announced tariff exemptions on a range of products post the complaints lodged by...

Compared to August, it dropped 5.13 percentage points in September. Working days picked up from August across downstream die-casting plants as they ended summer breaks in September. This accounted for month-on-month increase in operating rate. However, actual demand failed to rebound on the year, with few downstream plants restocking before the National Day holiday and the...

Nalco CMD estimates aluminium consumption rise in India to 7.2 million tonnes in next five years

Aluminium consumption in India may reportedly double to 7.2 million tonnes in the next five years from the existing level of 3.6 million tonnes. Mr. Tapan Kumar Chand, CMD of Nalco said this while addressing the National Aluminium Network Meet 2018, at New Delhi. He also mentioned that India’s import of downstream aluminium products may rise to around US$ 5 million in case no importance is given to it.
