China’s secondary aluminium operating rates fell nearly 1% in June on lower domestic downstream demand

According to the Shanghai Metals Market data, China's average secondary aluminium operating rates in June fell 0.7 percentage point to 48 per cent month-on-month. In May, the operating rates were 48.69 per cent after growing by 1.6 percentage points from the previous month. Year-on-year, China’s June secondary aluminium operating rates registered a decline of 4.3 percentage points, lower than the yearly drop of 5 percentage points in May. Shanghai Metals Market suggests higher arrivals of aluminium alloy ingots from overseas to China in June attributed to the month-on-month downtick in the country's secondary aluminium operating rates. However, SMM expects the operating rates in July to remain stable. There was no significant change in secondary aluminium demand in China or overseas. Weak...

SLM Solutions and Honeywell jointly developing 3D printed aluminium alloy parameter sets for aerospace components

Germany-based metal additive manufacturing leader SLM Solutions, in collaboration with Honeywell, is developing 3D printed aluminium parts. Working with aluminium alloy F357, they are jointly producing parameter sets, which will deliver considerably improved material properties compared to parts manufactured through die-casting. The goal is to use these parameter sets to reduce manufacturing times and costs for the production of aerospace components with high layer thickness. In 2019, Honeywell first started exploring AM aluminium parts and parameters using an increased layer thickness of 60 and 90 µm on a quad-laser SLM 500 Selective Laser Melting Machine. SLM Solutions was the supplier of generic aluminium parameter sets to Honeywell then to complete material qualification. However,...

Reimplementation of 10% tariffs on Canada’s unalloyed aluminium exports would be a wrong move by US: Kirsten Hillman

Canada suggests the United States be patient about determining whether to reimpose aluminium tariffs. In response to the United States’ allegations that the raw aluminium exports from Canada to the US have surged ever since the tariffs were lifted in May 2019, Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman said there was an increase in the production of unalloyed or raw aluminium as producers were asked to shift their production from value-added products to primary aluminium amid a drop in aluminium alloy demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hillman believes the demand will rebounce as the auto industry and other manufacturing sectors will come back online. According to her, the situation will rectify itself in the coming months. “Let’s take a little time to see how this settles out and make sure...
