ARABAL 2014 officially inaugurated
His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, deputised His Excellency Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister, to inaugurate the 18th Arab International Aluminium Conference (Arabal 2014) today Wednesday, November 26, 2014, which is being held in the Kingdom of Bahrain from November 25 to 27, 2014.

On this occasion, HE Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister for honouring him with inaugurating the conference on HRH’s behalf, and confirmed that HRH is the leading supporter of the industry. Thanks to HRH’s visionary leadership, Bahrain was the leading country in the Gulf in establishing the first aluminium smelter in the region. HRH provides further and continuous support through HRH’s initiative to host this leading event in the aluminium industry.

HE also emphasized that hosting Arabal - one of the leading events of the aluminium industry in the Middle East that witnesses the participation of aluminium industry leaders in the world - for the fourth time in the Kingdom of Bahrain, indicates the leading position of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which is a pioneer in the aluminium industry since 1960s, and home to one of the largest aluminium smelters in the world – Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C (Alba).

HE said: “The wise leadership provides immense support to the development of this industry, to enable Alba to compete globally and meet the growing demand on its products, especially after acquiring the approval of the Bahrain Cabinet, led by His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, to the recommendation made by the Coordinating Committee chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, regarding the gas allocation for Alba’s reduction Line 6. At the cost of around US$ 2.5 billion, this project will add 400,000 metric tonnes to the Company’s existing production 913,000 mt, and will increase the capacity to 1.3 million mt.”

HE also pointed that Line 6 expansion project will contribute to the Kingdom’s national economy, create additional job opportunities for the qualified national potentials.

HE wished success to this event and all the participants, and wished to reach recommendations that would have a positive impact on the growth and development of the aluminium industry worldwide.

Following the opening, HE toured the exhibition and visited the major exhibitors of the aluminium industry, as well as local and international downstream industries.

The opening ceremony of Arabal 2014, hosted by Alba (one of the largest and most modern smelters in the world), witnessed the presence of distinguished guests from the Kingdom of Bahrain and the global aluminium industry, including ministers, ambassadors, high government officials, CEOs of the region’s aluminium smelters as well as business leaders from various industrial sectors.

During his introductory speech, Alba’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister for providing patronage to the conference, which confirms the leadership support to the aluminium industry in Bahrain as one of the major contributors to the national economy. He said: “I am honoured to welcome His Excellency Shaikh bin Khalid Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister, and all the participants joining us in the opening ceremony of this leading industrial event.”

He also emphasized that the Kingdom of Bahrain, being home to the first aluminium smelter in the Gulf region, is proud to host Arabal for the fourth time and expressed that Alba is extremely proud of its association with Arabal, an event that represents the GCC smelters.”

He said: “I congratulate the Arabal Organising Committee for the special place that this event holds today in the aluminium industry. Our special thanks goes to Mohammed Al Naki, Chairman of the Arabal Organising Committee for his leadership and efforts in presenting this leading industrial event with excellent organisation, and in bringing together the leaders of world smelters.”

Alba’s Chairman also expressed his thanks to the guests for being in Bahrain and sharing their experience with one of the most important industries of the future, which will enrich the conference and ensure achieving its goals.”

Chairman of Arabal Organising Committee, Mohammed Al-Naki presented the history of Arabal since its inception in 1983 in his opening address. He also stated: “This year, as Arabal comes to Bahrain for the fourth time, we take a closer look at Alba’s role in the regional and global aluminium industry. Not to forget, the massive role played by Bahrain’s aluminium downstream sector, which is one of the most organised and leading industries in the region. It is our pleasure to welcome you today in Arabal 2014 and we look forward to meeting you in 2015.”

Alba’s Chief Executive Officer, Tim Murray presented the welcome address, in which he stated: “Alba welcomes the representatives of leading companies from the region and across the globe present here today for Arabal 2014. This year’s focus will be on the strengths and challenges faced by the Middle East aluminium industry and its poised growth for the future, which will be through discussion panels, workshops, and key note presentations by industry experts and professionals. We thank you all for joining us in the Kingdom of Bahrain for a significant event such as Arabal and wish you all a rewarding experience during the event.”

The inauguration ceremony was followed by the Executive Industry Panel Discussion comprising CEOs of GCC Smelters moderated by Mutalaq H. Al-Morished, Executive Vice President, Corporate Finance and Chief Financial Officer, SABIC.

The Gulf Aluminium Safety (GAC) Awards were held in recognition of the companies’ contribution to a sustainable Gulf region. GAC Environmental Awards went to Ma'aden for Smelter Category, and Midal Cables for Downstream Category, while GAC Health & Safety Awards went to Alba for Smelter Category, and Gulf Extrusions for Downstream Category.

The afternoon session comprised three Panel discussions: “Outlook for Global Aluminium Industry” followed by “Bahrain at the Heart of Aluminium Downstream”. A keynote presentation “Aluminium vs. Steel” delivered by Goran Djukanovic from Aluminum Times, UK preceded the Panel Discussion on “Renewable Eneregy”, which was the concluding event of the day.

Arabal 2014, under the patronage of HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, is being held under the theme “GCC: An Aluminium Power House” from November 25 to 27, at Gulf Hotel, Kingdom of Bahrain.
