The proposed Srikakulam aluminium smelter project in Andhra Pradesh is gaining momentum, with around 6,800 acres of saline land earmarked at Mulapeta and Pundi for the large-scale industrial development. The proposal could also bridge Odisha’s alumina industry with Andhra Pradesh’s coastal port infrastructure, forming a potential industrial link between the two states.

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu discussed the proposed smelter with Union Minister for Mines G Kishan Reddy in Delhi, highlighting the availability of around 6,800 acres of saline land in Srikakulam district. Out of this, 5,000 acres are located in Mulapeta and 1,800 acres in Pundi.

Naidu sought consideration of the land for major industrial development, noting that a project of such scale could bring significant benefits to the Srikakulam residents.

The Mulapeta-Pundi region already has port, national highway and railway connectivity, while future air connectivity could further strengthen its suitability for heavy industries, Naidu said. The Mulapeta Greenfield Port, in particular, is expected to support large-scale cargo movement.

Naidu noted that the possibility of sourcing alumina from Angul in Odisha for the proposed smelter is also being explored. This could form a strategic partnership between Odisha’s alumina-producing base and Andhra Pradesh’s coastal industrial and port infrastructure, thereby strenthening the Indian aluminium value chain.

According to Naidu, Kishan Reddy responded positively to the proposal, with a central inspection team from the Ministry of Mines scheduled to visit the identified locations within a week to assess land feasibility and infrastructure requirements.

Further discussions will be coordinated with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Andhra Pradesh government regarding the use of saline land and the proposed industrial development.

Naidu said that the project could provide a significant boost to industrialisation and infrastructure development across Uttarandhra.

“With port, road, rail and air connectivity, the Mulapeta-Pundi region has the potential to evolve into a hub for heavy industries, manufacturing units, logistics companies and other investments,” he stated.

This proposal is a step forward for the Indian aluminium industry, making the value chain more resilient and efficient.
