
An empty and overlooked office building in Amsterdam is currently being renovated aesthetically into the new Goede Doelen Loterijenhead quarters. The spectacular use of aluminium is giving the building its unique look.
The building is redesigned with a series of rooftop solar panels and shimmering aluminium leaves which are both sustainable and eye catching. The project is the brainchild of Benthem Crouwel Architects who made the design keeping sustainable energy sources in mind. The newly designed office is expected to open in 2018.

Currently, a total of 500 employees from Goede Doelen Loterijen are based at fifteen different locations around Amsterdam, but soon those will be merged to this new location. The employees co-operated in the design of their new building, which will take over a vacant building that is in serious need of restructuring. The redesigning work of this building is expected to get an “Outstanding” BREEAM rating, which is the highest recognition in this category for its commitment to sustainable existence and operations.

Notwithstanding the design, the building will have ample office space, a TV studio, public restaurant, and auditorium for the use of employees and those will also be open for public meetings and events. The winning factor however is the unique exterior of the building. An extra floor has been added to the building so that it can create a uniform roof space covering the entire building and extending over the lush courtyard.
Columns of the building that support the roof are shaped like tree trunks to create the impression of trees with aluminium leaves. A cluster of 6,800 polished aluminium leaves gives off a shining luster which creates the illusion of a swaying forest canopy. Notably, a total of 2,400 solar panels are installed on the roof to power the building. A rooftop rainwater collection system is also installed which will also be used to water the building’s gardens. The design and functionality work together to create a building that is green in its real sense, both because of its tree and leaves concept and the sustainable features.
