Ann Arbor's City Council has recently approved the next public art installation along Stadium Boulevard later this year. The installation will create "Leaven," a $100,000 piece of public art made out of aluminium plates, as part of the Stadium Boulevard reconstruction project.

The art piece will be created by Brian Brush; a New York-based artist from Brush Design LLC. Brush will create a uniform pattern of reflective, diamond-shaped aluminium plates which will be installed as "leaves" along the new retaining walls that run along the south side of Stadium Boulevard.
The artist describes Leaven (pronounced lev-uhn) as a "vine-like relief sculpture that mimics and magnifies the adjacent natural elements," The inspiration for his designing came from nature where stones, leaves and branches make running patterns. The flowing branches of reflective aluminium leaves in the recessed pockets of the wall create a nature like atmosphere on the wall.
The artist uses anodized aluminium for its ability to reflect its surroundings. The leaves are 9”x9” square in diameter each rotated in a diamond orientation. The reflections are achieved by folding the bottom half of each leaves upward in three different angles. The soft and diffused reflections of the surroundings in the leaves with blurred effects will create a spectacular atmosphere when people will move past the wall at faster speed.

"The myriad reflections on the aluminum 'leaves' intend to embody Ann Arbor's many colors at different times of the day and year, while also mediating the contrast between the surrounding natural material and the built environment," the artist said in his description.
