Alumina weekly recap: China's alumina shipment to Russia in March spurts up due to Western-led sanctions; Alba receives RoSPA award for outstanding ‘Safety and Health’ standards

EDITED BY : SARNALI CHAKRABORTY 3MINS READ

The after effects of Russia-Ukraine crisis can still be felt in the global alumina industry. To begin with, as per customs figures released on Wednesday, April 20, China's alumina export to Russia had increased by more than 90 times in March compared to the same month a year ago, as Western-led sanctions had cut off some of its usual supply. The global alumina market is expected to be in a state of flux in the second quarter (Q2) of 2022, as the fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as a bevy of other interrelated factors, threaten to disrupt supply and demand fundamentals. However on the other, the news of Alba receiving the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Medal Award for maintaining a good safety and health record in fiscal year 2021, shows the care and precautions they take about the workers. Following investigations by international media, Guinea's interim government is keen to learn about the work plan and length of each project to extract alumina from bauxite that is being carried out on their soil.
