Following the recent military escalation in Ukraine, Alcoa is pressing the Biden administration to obstruct U.S. aluminium imports from Russia. As a result, aluminium prices increased by more than 3 per cent. According to recent news reports, the White House is reportedly exploring various alternatives regarding imports of Russian aluminium, including perhaps forbidding leading manufacturer Rusal from selling its goods in the United States.

This week, President Joe Biden's administration examined various alternatives regarding imports of Russian aluminium, including perhaps forbidding Rusal, the biggest producer of aluminium outside of China, from selling its goods in the United States. Washington has fewer Russian businesses to restrict as the Russian invasion of Ukraine has extended this year, which has increased interest in preventing American imports of Russian aluminium.
Biden prohibited the import of Russian oil and other energy supplies into the United States in March. Due partly to worries that such a move may increase consumer costs, aluminium was excluded from the U.S sanctions. Along with being utilised in vehicles, aircraft, and other large machinery, aluminium is also employed in various consumer goods.
Also, Alcoa announced that it has requested that Russian aluminium be removed from the London Metal Exchange's list because doing so "will disproportionately influence the global contract for the metal by one brand that much of the Western world has rejected and would not properly reflect supply and demand dynamics."
