ABNT NBR 17194: World’s first aluminium beverage cans regulations debut in Brazil

On November 4, the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT) introduced the first-ever technical quality standard for the aluminium beverage can industry. Known as ABNT NBR 17194 — Aluminum Packaging – Beverage Cans, this milestone establishes Brazil as a global leader in quality regulation for this sector.

About the new standard

The new standard aims to enhance the safety and confidence of workers and consumers of aluminium-canned beverages. It provides comprehensive guidelines, ranging from fundamental concepts to detailed specifications.

The standard outlines the visual, dimensional, and functional characteristics of aluminium cans and includes requirements for transportation, handling, storage, and packaging processes. With rigorous procedures, recommendations, and precautions, ABNT NBR 17194 ensures that aluminium beverage packaging meets the highest quality benchmarks.

Marking 35 years of aluminium cans in Brazil, the publication of the ABNT NBR 17194 standard underscores their significance in the market. This milestone ensures the sector's growth and safety and reaffirms its dedication to delivering superior quality to society.

From mineral water to traditional beer, aluminium packaging stands out as the most sustainable option worldwide. With over 30 billion units consumed annually—equivalent to 3,000 cans per second—it caters to diverse needs in various shapes and sizes.
