With only 10 per cent of globally traded alumina changing hands on the spot market, Hindalco is moving its tenders online in an effort to strengthen the evidence behind benchmark prices. For a commodity market where a relatively small number of transactions can influence prices across a much larger pool of long-term contracts, the quality of the underlying data matters. That is the challenge facing alumina, and Hindalco is now testing whether digital trading infrastructure can help address it. Hindalco is expected to conduct its first digital tender for metallurgical-grade alumina on Metalshub before the end of 2026. The physical cargo sold through the tender may be only part of the significance of the transaction. The more important outcome could be the structured market data generated...

Sumanth Sarkar, a mechanical engineer professor and research scientist Xiaochun Zeng developed an entirely new class of alloys named Nemalloy that combines aluminium and iron to produce a high-strength material at least 35 per cent lighter than a conventional aluminium alloy. In August, under the Future of lightweighting category of the 'Altair Enlighten Award 2022' recognized the project's potential impact on the industry. The awards, which cooperate with the Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research (CAR), honour innovations that lighten vehicles to save money, increase efficiency, save fuel, and pave the way for a more sustainable automotive future. This unique creation was the result of an effective partnership between McMaster researchers, industrial partner Nemak, and the...

The global primary aluminium segment witnessed a lot of events. To begin with, on Thursday, September 29, the global aluminium benchmark price saw a dramatic expansion of US$181 per tonne due to the ban on Russian supplies by the London Metal Exchange. As lightweight and low carbon emissions have become the two prime criteria for manufacturing vehicles, aluminium is hogging maximum limelight as a crucial raw material in the transportation industry for obvious reasons. The silvery-white metal is lightweight and infinitely recyclable, which has made the use of aluminium popular in manufacturing automobiles. To throw more light on the demand and consumption of aluminium in the transportation sector, AlCircle has published a report on “Future of Aluminium in Transportation Sector - an industry analysis with forecasts to 2027.” The report has revealed that aluminium consumption in the global transportation sector stood at around 25.5 million tonnes in 2021, representing 27% of the total global usage of 93.5 million tonnes. It grew 5.8% per...

ASAŞ Alüminyum from Turkey has purchased two new aluminium extrusion lines from SMS Group to manufacture aluminium profile sizes that are yet to be found in Europe. ASAŞ has been dependent on the latter's extrusion technology for a long time now, and these new lines are 150 MN extrusion and a tube array, well accompanied by a 45 MN HybrEx® line. ASAŞ Alüminyum pays extra attention to the quality of products shipped from its factory, along with showing utmost importance to plant efficiency and stress-free operations, all of which require an incredible amount of technological prowess. ASAŞ already have been manufacturing with the help of four extrusion lines from SMS, a single-stand aluminium cold rolling mill and a colour coating line (CCL). But this 150 MN extrusion press can be regarded...

This partnership will focus on the whole aluminium value chain, particularly on the extruded aluminium components Hydro supplies to Velux. As the manufacturer claims, by the end of 2022, this conglomeration would help Velux recede almost 15,000-20,000 tonnes of carbon from its aluminium profiles, where in the beginning, 94 per cent of its carbon footprint emerged from raw materials used in making the products. The roof window and skylights maker, Velux's Executive Vice President responsible for Products & Innovation, Tina Mayn, illustrated: "With buildings accounting for almost 40 per cent of CO2...
