Uniprom to close down KAP aluminium smelter by December 30

The Aluminium Plant Podgorica, which is also commonly known as Uniprom KAP, is a Montenegrin aluminium smelting company located in Podgorica, Montenegro.

Uniprom to close down KAP aluminium smelter

Uniprom plans to complete the proposed close down of the electrolysis plant of aluminium smelter KAP by 30th December 2021, as reported by local media agencies.

On 26th December 2021, Nebojsa Dozic, the General Manager of KAP said: “The aluminium company has so far shut down half of the electrolysis cells at the smelter.”

However, in the previous week, Uniprom directed the smelter to commence a phased shutdown of cells in the electrolysis plant and on 15th December, a drive which will lead to a halt in the production of primary aluminium due to a surge in energy price that state-run power distributor EPCG tenders to come into force from the initial days of 2022.

In December 2021, Uniprom further proposed to EPCG to take over the production of primary aluminium at KAP free of charge for a year, commencing 1st January 2022 to shun the shutdown of the smelter. On this issue, EPCG responded by saying: “Our majority shareholder, the government, has the responsibility of deciding whether to accept the proposal, as the utility company is not registered for aluminium production.”
