In a significant step for Europe’s energy and circular economy ambitions, French transmission system operator RTE (Réseau de Transport d'Électricité) and cable technology giant Nexans have officially initiated the first-ever industrial-scale aluminium recycling project in France for high and extra high-voltage power cables. The project is part of a partnership that began in 2024 and exemplifies how circularity and decarbonisation can work synergistically to reconfigure Europe’s energy infrastructure. Closing the loop: a European first For the first time, aluminium from decommissioned transmission wires will be completely recycled and incorporated back into RTE's grid. This project will recycle around 600 metric tonnes of aluminium a year and will save at least 400 metric tonnes of CO₂...

While the United States witnessed a modest uptick in aluminium imports during Q1 2025, aluminium exports took a noticeable plunge. Not by a marginal 10,000 or 20,000 tonnes, but a steep 95,000 tonnes year-on-year. From 854,000 tonnes in Q1 2024, US aluminium exports (including scrap) shrank to 759,000 tonnes in Q1 2025, marking an 11 per cent annual decline. This decline, however, isn’t evenly spread across all aluminium product categories or destinations, and it raises questions about the underlying shifts in global aluminium trade dynamics. Exports across the board According to recent figures from the US Geological Survey, the fall in aluminium exports touched all categories - crude metal and alloy, semi-fabricated products, and even scrap, though to varying degrees. Crude metal and...

Volgren, Australia’s largest bus body manufacturer, is strengthening its commitment to innovation and sustainability through a long-standing partnership with Capral Aluminium. The collaboration ensures a reliable supply of high-quality, locally sourced aluminium that forms the backbone of Volgren’s bus body structures. Image credit: www.capral.com “There’s been a misunderstanding in some parts of the industry that, because we use the Co-Bolt gussets from Hess, all aluminium used in our buses comes from Switzerland, but our aluminium is all locally sourced from Capral,” said Yuri Tessari, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Strategy at Volgren. “We only use HESS’ Co-Bolt technology that helps us to bolt and screw our structure together without the need to weld.” Since its founding in the...

Primary aluminium inventories registered with the London Metal Exchange (LME) continued to rise in June, reaching 338,000 tonnes, up from 321,850 tonnes in May and 250,875 tonnes in April. This steady increase in stock levels was largely driven by a significant surge in Indian-origin aluminium entering LME warehouses. Image for representational purpose Indian aluminium inventories climbed sharply from 25,050 tonnes in April to 97,950 tonnes in May, and further to 114,150 tonnes in June. This rise boosted India’s share of total LME primary aluminium stocks to 34 per cent in June, up from 30 per cent in May and just 10 per cent in April, underscoring the growing global presence of Indian metal. In contrast, Russian-origin aluminium inventories at the LME have remained fairly stable in...

While both nations, the US and India, engage in a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) discussion, the latter country has shown an increased retaliatory action as opposed to the current import tariff on aluminium and steel imposed by the US. Recently, India announced to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) its intention to raise an additional USD 3.82 billion in import tariffs with significant adjustment duties on US goods. Does this signal a further trade tension between the two nations or the start of a new trade war? Image source: shutterstock.com The unprecedented hike in the US tariff on aluminium and steel from 25 per cent to 50 per cent on June 3, 2025, has been the stimulus for India for the additional tariff cost. With the higher duties, the Indian exports will witness an impact worth...

At its 60th Annual General Meeting, Vedanta Ltd. unveiled an ambitious roadmap for its next phase of growth, centred on a transformative 3D strategy of Demerger, Diversification, and Deleveraging. The centrepiece of this strategy is a major demerger that has already secured over 99.5 per cent shareholder and creditor approval. Under this plan, Vedanta will split into four independent, sector-focused listed companies, each with its own growth trajectory and investor base. The goal: a sharper focus, faster growth, and clearer value creation. But Vedanta isn't stopping...

The European Union’s move to eliminate carbon-emitting vehicles by 2035 is vital not just for climate goals, but also for the economic future of Europe. Image for representational purpose According to a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E), maintaining the 2035 zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate alongside robust industrial policies could boost annual car production to 16.8 million units, matching the pre-2008 level. However, the report warns, scrapping or weakening the regulation could result in the loss of up to 1 million automotive jobs across the EU and the collapse of two-thirds of planned battery investments. European automakers are already under pressure from rising costs, strong competition from China and US, and a new 25 percent US tariff on car imports. In May, the...

A gentle but urgent reminder: the world has just five years left to meet the 2030 low-carbon target – a milestone set by high energy-intensive industries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent from 2010 levels of approximately 43,420.56 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, aiming to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This ambitious target is not an individual checkpoint but a vital stop on the journey to net zero-emissions by 2050. With the clock ticking, it is essential to track where exactly do the world’s carbon-heavy industries stand today? Are we on pace—or falling further behind? A report by the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP), which is a climate alliance dedicated to accelerating decarbonisation of the world’s heaviest-emitting industries,...
