World Primary Aluminium surplus in 2013 at 1.102 million tonnes as per WBMS

Refined Aluminium Production in January to December 2013 rose by 1.669 million tonnes from the same period in 2012. Total reported stocks fell by 82000 tonnes during December and at the end of the month were 7.15 million tonnes, which equated to 56 days demand and compares with 7.361 million tonnes at the end of 2012.
Total stocks held in the four exchanges in London, Shanghai, USA and Tokyo were 5.578 million tonnes at the end of December 2013 which was 75000 tonnes below the December 2012 total. Global producer stocks at the end of December 2013 were 1.17 million tonnes, which was 87000 tonnes below the previous year's close.
Overall, global production rose in January to December 2013 by 3.6 per cent compared 2012. Chinese output was estimated at 22.046 million tonnes and this currently accounts for 45.9 per cent of the world production total.
Chinese apparent demand was 8.3 percent higher than 2012. China was a net importer of unwrought aluminium during 2012 but has become a net exporter in 2013 with exports exceeding imports by 91000 tonnes. However, during the last quarter of the year China imported 193000 tonnes and exported 164000 tonnes. During the whole of the 2012 calendar year Chinese net imports totalled a mere 7000 tonnes.
Production in the EU27 fell by 3.7 percent and NAFTA output rose by 1.3 percent. EU27 demand was 3.6 percent below the comparable 2012 total. Global demand rose by 2.0 percent during the year compared with the levels recorded one year previously. In December 2013, primary aluminium production was 4.07 million tonnes and consumption was 3.96 million tonnes.
