According to the latest USGS release on Bauxite and Alumina in the Second Quarter 2017, imports of alumina by the U.S. in the third quarter of 2017 were 364,000 tonnes, 19% more than the amount of 307,000 tonnes imported in the second quarter of 2017 and 17% more than the amount of 315,000 tonnes in third quarter of 2016. This shows growing consumption by the local aluminium smelters in the U.S. in Q3 2017.

The amount is however, 8% less than the amount in the third quarter of 2015. The leading sources of imported alumina in the third quarter of 2017 were Brazil (41%), Australia (27%), and Jamaica (15%). The sources remain unchanged from Q2 2017.
Exports of alumina during the third quarter of 2017 were 103,000 tonne, 32% less than those in the second quarter of 2017, which exported about 151,000 tonnes. The amount is 72% less than those in the third quarter of 2016 and 82% less than those in the third quarter of 2015.

Drops in alumina exports YoY are attributable to the shutdown of Alcoa’s Point Comfort Refinery, TX Texas. Sherwin Alumina Co. LLC also shut down its 1.65-Mt/yr alumina refinery in Gregory, TX. However, drop in alumina export QoQ is driven by more consumption of alumina by domestic smelters.
The leading destinations for alumina exported in the third quarter of 2017 were Russia (31%) and the Netherlands (28%). Iceland was a major destination for alumina export in Q2 2017, which was taken over by Netherlands. Capacity expansion in Noranda’s Gramercy alumina refinery is expected to impact the total alumina production and export for Q4 2017.
