As shown by the latest US Geological Survey data on bauxite and alumina imports in the third quarter of 2019, the United States imported 929,000 tonnes of crude and dried bauxite, less 10% per cent from Q2 2019 and 5 per cent from the same period last year. The volume is slightly more than those in the third quarter of 2018. With this, the US' total bauxite imports in the first three quarters of 2019 stood at 2.7 million tonnes.

Jamaica (75%), Brazil (17%), and Guinea (6%) were the leading sources of crude and dried bauxite imports in the third quarter of 2019. According to the data, Jamaica supplied 696,000 tonnes, while Brazil supplied 157,000 tonnes in Q3 2019.

Imports of alumina during Q3 2019 were 479,000 tonnes, 30% more than the revised amount in the Q2 2019, 8% more than those in Q3 2018, and 31% more than those in Q3 2017. The leading sources of imported alumina in the second quarter of 2019 were Brazil (60%), Australia (20%), and Jamaica (7%). This brought the total alumina imports by the US in Q3 2019 to 1.5 million tonne.
Exports of alumina during Q3 2019 were 34,500 tonne, 16% less than those in Q2 2019, 39% less than those in the third quarter of 2018, and 67% less than those in the third quarter of 2017. Total alumina export in the first three quarters stood at 140,000 tonnes. Leading destinations for alumina exported in Q3 2019 were Mexico (29%) and Canada (21%).
