Trivium Packaging bagged the Design for a Better World Award from Centro Brasil Design for creating a refillable aluminium cologne bottle for Boticario. The result was a user-friendly, lightweight, and recyclable cologne refill bottle with a unique dropper that came with this cutting-edge packaging was made to suit the original glass container.

Trivium created an idea that uses a unique aluminium bottle with a specific dropper to enable the end user to conveniently refill the standard glass. The idea was tested in Boticario's filling line and passed several protection tests for transportation, shelf life, vacuum sealing, and leaking.
To ensure the new refill solution had a reduced carbon footprint than competing products—which are often made of plastic—the business performed a lifecycle evaluation. Compared to the original packaging, it weighs 89 per cent less and has up to 10 per cent recycled material.

The Boticario internal design team's thoughts served as the foundation for the project's brief, which tasked suppliers with coming up with a refill option for the company's standard packaging. The package had a QR code that contained details about the product and usage guidelines, enticing customers to recycle it.
This project served as a successful illustration of how to increase functionality for consumers while lowering environmental impact and boosting performance. Aluminium's inherent qualities also helped protect against oxygen and UV rays while extending shelf life.
“We conducted a lifecycle assessment to ensure that the new refill solution had a lower carbon footprint compared to other products available, usually made using plastics. Our packaging includes a QR code with product information and instructions for use, encouraging end users to recycle the packaging,” added Trivium.
