According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Changes to scrap metal protocols have led to a “concerning” shortfall in the amount of aluminium packaging recovered in the first quarter of 2015, some industry sources have claimed in response to provisional recycling data released today (April 22). And, changes to rules on energy-from-waste accreditation have also seen an estimated shortfall of 110,000 tonnes in the amount of recovery PRNs accepted over the first quarter. The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) has reached a $1.74 million settlement agreement with San Leandro, California-based Alco Iron & Metal Co., following an investigation that revealed the scrap metal company claimed refunds on California Redemption Value (CRV) beverage containers it later sold to a company that redeemed them a second time. This led to an initiative called Refoil, which was launched three years ago to support salons in directing foil products to recycling, with 150 salons around the country participating to date. American Recycling Services, (ARS), an Alliance, Ohio-based scrap recycling company, has been approved by the Alliance City Council for a $103,000 loan through the Urban Development Action Grant (UDAG) program. The UDAG loan is part of a $257,000 loan package that includes a loan from Huntington Bank and a loan from the company’s owner. The money will be used to expand the scrap recycler’s operations and includes the purchase of equipment and the hiring of additional employees. This has been a tough winter for everyone, including the New Providence Fire Department — the aluminum can cart was plowed in during much of February and March, which means donations are down. For those who may not know about the can cart, three or four times a year Frederick Gaghan and Emil Koref take the cart down to Newark and recycle the aluminum cans. The proceeds from the recycling are donated to the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation for Children. Not only was the cart snowed in, the bad weather probably kept people from even putting a run to drop off their aluminum cans on their to-do list. The Mumbai-based Metal Recycling Association of India (MRAI) is conducting meetings in an effort to stave off a regulation that requires overseas scrap shippers to record videos of their container loading process. According to a study conducted in Barbados, the failing financial conditions are affecting the waste recycling efforts of University of West Indies (UWI) as well as Barbados in general. The study was conducted between April 30 and December 30, 2013 with a conclusion that read “the major waste management challenge affecting the UWI and Barbados as a whole was limited financial resources”. The Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency is planning to expand and is requesting bids from private contractors who will be able to process and market the entire supply of residential and commercial recyclables it receives from Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. The agency at present deals with limited materials, including newspapers, corrugated cardboard, brown paper bags and aluminium cans. By introducing a closed-loop system in partnership with car manufacturers, Novelis can capture this scrap aluminium and return it to its materials system. In the US, the company has recently started a closed-loop partnership with Ford for the manufacture of the Ford-150 truck, but a similar arrangement has already been in place in the UK with Jaguar Land Rover. Following approval from the German Federal Cartel Office, Hydro has completed the previously announced acquisition of WMR Recycling GmbH. With effect from April 1, WMR is a fully-owned subsidiary of Hydro, legally named Hydro Aluminium Recycling Deutschland GmbH. Utilizing x-ray transmission and several other sorting technology elements, the plant is set up to sort 36,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap per year. The plant, which is located in Dormagen, Germany, will supply Hydro's recycling plants in Europe with shredded and sorted post-consumed aluminium scrap.
The innovative recycling program named ‘Cans for Pets’ funded by Alcoa Foundation and PA Resources Council has reached a milestone achievement of collecting 300,000 aluminium pet food cans in the United States. The program promises to pay 5 cents to a local animal shelter for every aluminium pet food can recycled through them.
