According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. China customs data found that the country’s aluminium scrap imports in October extended the month-on-month decline by 47.3 per cent to stand at 60,240 tonnes. In September, the import volume had fallen by 18.7 per cent from 141,000 tonnes in August to 114,300 tonnes, which indicates the fact that the monthly decline rate in China’s aluminium scrap imports rose in October. A fund from Nespresso has helped New York City residents to recycle aluminium coffee capsules and other small pieces of aluminium, which were not considered as recyclable earlier. Such lightweight items included alongside plastics, glass and other metals in curbside bins were not sortable for value before Nespresso’s initiative. After a partnership between the city's Department of Sanitation (DSNY), Sims Municipal Recycling and Nespresso, Sims added a new nonferrous metal processing line which could process such small items. Taiwan’s imports of aluminium scrap from the US climbed by 36.74% from July and 6.45% from June in August. Taiwan imported 4,950 tonnes of scrap in August, from 3,620 tonnes and 4,650 tonnes imported in July and June. Imports were down by 8.67% from 5,420 tonnes in May, but up 15.12% from 4,300 tonnes in April. Shanghai Metals Market found operations at Chinese secondary aluminium producers continued to increase in October, as overall demand in the second half of the year improved from the first half. An SMM data showed the Chinese secondary aluminium operating rates in October stood at 60.69 per cent after rising by 0.83 percentage points month-on-month, while over the year they climbed up by 4.71 percentage points. John Nowell’s year-long initiation of making helipads for local hospitals from used aluminium cans has come a long way over the year and a charity is now reportedly appealing for donations of the empty cans. According to the report, the charity has already collected 25 per cent of the aluminium needed to make the first helipad. After being collected, the cans are transported to HMP Stocken where they are crushed to form one cubic metre cubes and stockpiled. According to a report from Shanghai Metals Market, China last week issued a fresh batch of metal scrap import quotas for the fourth quarter of 2019, reducing the permissible amount to 13,770 tonnes of newly restricted high-grade aluminium scrap. Together with the previous batches of quotas which allowed the imports of 77,875 tonnes of 7602000090 aluminium scrap into the Chinese market, the amount permitted now comes to 91,645 tonnes in total for the fourth quarter. This was caused by sharper price drop in finished product than scrap wheel prices driven by falling demand. The spread was 31.5¢/lb in October 2018. The spread between 356.1 alloy and 356 wheel scrap stood at 22.5¢/lb in the last week of October, up slightly from 19.5¢/lb in third week.
