Asian aluminium premiums are facing more pressure ahead of Q4 talks. CRU’s Asia CIF aluminium premium is now USD 202 per tonne, well below the USD 395 per tonne Main Japanese Port (MJP) Q3 benchmark. MJP Q4 offers have also dropped sharply. They fell from USD 325 per tonne in early September to USD 245–260 per tonne as the new quarter approaches. This shows weaker sentiment in the market. Aluminium premiums are under pressure across Asia, especially in Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan. These markets are more exposed to spot price changes, so premiums can move quickly when supply or demand changes. Aluminium d.d. Mostar from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has commissioned an ingot casting line supplied by Hertwich Engineering, Austria. In addition to electrolysis metal, the company can now remelt and cast clean process scrap on the new line, thus increasing the flexibility and production capacity of the casthouse. The line comprises a melting/casting furnace and an air-cooled belt-type ingot caster for up to ten tons per hour with ingots weighting between seven and ten kilograms. Air cooling ensures very high metal quality with respect to the hydrogen content. In addition, high-silicon and other eutectic and hyper eutectic alloys can be efficiently cast. Analysts at Goldman Sachs have argued that warehouse queues do not influence aluminium prices, rebutting complaints by users of the metal who have suggested the opposite. Long queues to take delivery of aluminium from London Metal Exchange warehouses have become the focus of a furious debate in recent months, triggering a series of complaints by metal users, criticism by senators and investigations by US regulators. Goldman, which owns one of the largest warehousing companies on the LME, has been named as a defendant in a number of class action lawsuits alleging its warehousing activities have pushed up aluminium prices. The bank has said the suits are meritless. Goldman’s analysts argued the queues had driven a dislocation between the price of LME futures and physical aluminium, but had...

It's been a year since Alcoa Intalco Works signed a 10-year power supply deal and two years since management and employees reached a new labor contract, avoiding a potentially crippling strike. For years uncertainty about the power supply cast a shadow over Alcoa's future in Whatcom County. Having those issues settled has allowed the facility west of Ferndale to focus on becoming more efficient, continuing some environmentally friendly initiatives and reaching out to strengthen relationships with employees, said plant manager Barry Hullett. Aluminum manufacturing is strongly tied to global markets, however, and the current issues are leaving the remaining U.S. plants in a precarious position. Globally the market is in a strange situation where demand is increasing, but prices have hovered...

RHB Research has maintained its Buy call on Press metal with a higher fair value of RM3.77 from RM2.77 after its recent disposal of the loss-making Hubei smelter via an asset swap in exchange for a profitable extrusion unit. In a note on Monday, RHB said it lauds Press’ disposal of a 20% stake in Press Metal Bintulu SB (PMB) to Sumitomo for RM444mil. “This will cut Press’ gearing from 1.74 times to 1.2 times, giving rise to a RM336.4mil disposal gain. However, ongoing repairs at the Mukah smelter and weak aluminium prices may cap its share price. “The disposal consideration of PMB will be subject to certain adjustments. We are hopeful of a reward of not more than US$21mil upon finalisation of PMB’s FY18 accounts, which take into account certain production costs that are likely within...

LME aluminium is expected to retest support at $1,842 per tonne, after it completes its pullback towards $1,860. The support is provided by the 38.2 percent Fibonacci retracement on the fall from the Aug. 19 high of $1,949 to the Sept. 17 low of $1,775.50. It has caused a pullback towards the lower channel line of a rising channel. The metal's escape from the channel signals it has moved into the price band of a duplicated channel, the lower channel line of which points to a target at $1,800. A more realistic target could be $1,816, the 23.6 percent retracement.

Russia's Rusal, the world's largest aluminum producer, is running its mills at full capacity for billet, slab and foundry alloy production but cutting ingot output, Rusal Marketing CEO Steve Hodgson said in an interview Friday in Tokyo. Later this month, Rusal will start negotiations with Japanese buyers on 2014 contracts for billet and other value-added products, or VAP. Hodgson said he expects a sellers' market. Rusal said previously it started to focus on VAP in 2012. VAP prices were generally $150-200/mt higher than the standard 99.7%-aluminum ingot, market sources said. Rising demand from Japan and elsewhere has expanded Rusal's VAP output to 42.8% of the company's total aluminum production in the April-June quarter, compared with 34% of sales in 2010. "Our VAP production is running...
