South China A00 aluminium ingot premium expected to ease from highs after national day holiday

In the final three trading days before the National Day holiday, the South China spot market stayed soft: aluminium prices continued to edge lower, the SHFE aluminium backwardation structure strengthened, and premiums over the next-month and far-month contracts were actually elevated. Ahead of the holiday, the willingness to cash out at the high basis was strong, and amid ongoing destocking, discount-priced cargoes still dominated spot circulation; demand was largely subdued, with only localized bargain-hunting replenishment and quite limited buying interest. On the whole, however, the high spot premium for aluminium ingots in South China remained largely intact. As of September 30, the SMM A00 aluminium (Foshan) spot premium over the 2610 contract stood at RMB 260 per tonne, still within...

Global aluminium industry gears up for ALUMINIUM 2026 in Düsseldorf with focus on recycling, innovation and demand

Four days to go, and the aluminium world is getting ready to move to Düsseldorf. From October 6-8, the city will host ALUMINIUM 2026 , with more than 800 exhibitors and partners and over 21,000 trade visitors expected at Messe Düsseldorf. The event will bring together producers, recyclers, downstream manufacturers, technology providers, equipment suppliers, policymakers and end users from across the global aluminium value chain. The 2026 edition comes at an important point for the aluminium industry. European producers are facing pressure from energy costs, international competition and tighter climate requirements, while concerns around raw material security and resilient supply chains continue to grow. At the same time, demand for aluminium is expanding across electric mobility,...

Aluminum Association launches “America Needs Aluminum” campaign

The Aluminum Association launched “America Needs Aluminum,” a new public awareness and advocacy campaign highlighting aluminum’s essential role in the US economy and calling for policies that help America make, recycle and build more with this critical material. The campaign centers on a straightforward message: America needs aluminum - let’s make more of it here. It builds on the association’s broader “all-of-the-above” strategy for aluminum supply, which calls for expanding both recycled and primary aluminum production, strengthening domestic manufacturing, improving energy availability and aggressively confronting unfair trade. “Aluminum is essential to nearly every part of modern American life - from our cars, homes and packaging to the power grid, fighter jets and advanced...

Aluminium overtakes copper for No.2 spot at Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto has been struggling for years to recover from the $38 billion purchase that elevated it to the world's biggest aluminium company but also brought it to the verge of bankruptcy. Now signs of price improvements for aluminium and related alumina and bauxite, amid slowing supplies out of China, are turning the division's fortunes around. In Rio Tinto's financial results on Thursday, data showed aluminium had surpassed copper as the second biggest contributor to underlying earnings - $1.25 billion against $910 million for copper - in 2014 behind iron ore. For perspective, in 2013, aluminium contributed $550 million versus $820 million by copper. "Our aluminium division has grown into a significant contributor to group earnings and cash flow," Chief Executive Sam Walsh said. Copper...

Aluminium futures weaken on global cues

Aluminium prices fell by 0.22 per cent to INR 113.85 per kg in futures trading today as speculators reduced positions amid weak global cues. Further, subdued demand in the domestic spot markets weighed on the prices of the metal. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in current month shed 25 paise, or 0.22 per cent, to INR 113.85 per kg in a business turnover of 237 lots. Similarly, the metal for delivery in March traded lower by 20 paise, or 0.17 per cent, to INR 115 per kg in 10 lots. Market analysts said the weakness in aluminium at futures trade was mostly in tune with a downtrend in base metals at the London Metal Exchange (LME) after China reported that consumer prices rose at the slowest pace in more than five years and factory-gate deflation deepened.

Hindalco Q3 profit seen up 26% to Rs 420 cr

Aluminium major Hindalco Industries will announce its third quarter earnings on Thursday. Profit after tax is expected to increase 26 percent year-on-year to Rs 420 crore led by strong revenue and operating income, according to a CNBC-TV18 poll. However, higher depreciation and interest costs may restrict profitability. Revenue may increase 21 percent to Rs 8,730 crore during October-December quarter from Rs 7,201 crore in same quarter last fiscal, driven by higher aluminum volumes. Aluminum volumes may be driven by ramp-up at Utkal refinery and Hirakud and Mahan smelters. Analysts see benefit from higher aluminum realizations. However, copper volumes may be flattish Y-o-Y due to maintenance shutdown in December. Operating profit (EBITDA) is seen rising 49 percent year-on-year to Rs 940...

Rio Tinto delivers underlying earnings1 of $9.3 billion and announces a 12 per cent increase in full year dividend

Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh said “Last year, we made a clear commitment to materially increase cash returns to our shareholders. We have delivered this today through a 12 per cent increase in our full year dividend and a proposed $2.0 billion share buy-back. These represent a total cash return to shareholders, in respect of 2014, of almost $6.0 billion. “Our continued financial and operating discipline enabled us to offset much of the impact of lower commodity prices in 2014. By increasing volumes and reducing costs, we achieved underlying earnings of $9.3 billion and we were able to maintain our EBITDA margin2 at 39 per cent. Free cash flow was assisted by a further reduction in capital expenditure3 and a successful programme to release working capital. As a consequence, we have...

Amid a weak trend in base metals at the London Metal Exchange, aluminium prices fell by 0.56 per cent to INR115.20 per kg in futures trading today as speculators trimmed positions. Further, subdued demand in the domestic spot markets also weighed on the metal prices. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in February eased by 65 paise, or 0.56 per cent, to INR 115.20 per kg in business turnover of 228 lots. The metal for delivery in March shed 55 paise, or 0.47 per cent to INR116.25 per kg in five lots. Market analysts said the weakness in aluminium at futures trade was mostly in tune with a downtrend in industrial metals at the London Metal Exchange and subdued demand at domestic spot markets.

The company has reported a rise of $300 million in underlying profits over six months ending in December. Tomago aluminium smelter, the biggest customer for the company is turning things around for the company. AGL had dropped hints that it may close down due to market uncertainties but as the condition of the global aluminium industry improves, AGL’s future looks promising. Indonesian Inalum smelter might cutback production diverting power to main grid

Indonesia’s only aluminium smelter, PT Inalum is planning to cut back their production to 202,000 tons whereas they have a capacity of 250,000 tons because they need to divert some of their power for public use. An official from the firm who did not wish to be named said that nearly 210 megawatts of power would be given to PLN from April this year reflecting the woeful infrastructural condition faced by South East Asia’s biggest economy. Energy will be transferred from the Asahan 2 hydro power plant, from where Inalum gets the power to product ingots, to the North Sumatra grid. Sofyan Basir, the CEO of the state-owned Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) electrical utility, said that the energy diversion from Inalum smelter is supposedly for “only 6 months”, until the proposed power plant...

NALCO Q3 profit may surge 167% to Rs 350 cr

National Aluminium Company's (NALCO) third quarter profit may jump 167 percent year-on-year to Rs 350 crore on strong operating income, according to the average of estimates of analysts polled by CNBC-TV18. Total turnover grew 17 percent to Rs 1,920 crore from Rs 1,644 crore during the same period. Operating profit may surge 130 percent Y-o-Y to Rs 470 crore and margin may expand 1210 basis points to 24.5 percent in the quarter gone by. Analysts feel alumina price gains may be offset by lower alumina volumes (due to cyclone Hudhud). Impact of lower alumina volumes may be partly offset by higher alumina realisations. They expect slightly better aluminum realisation on sequential basis despite lower LME due to weaker rupee. According to a poll, aluminum profits may be flat Q-o-Q due to...
