South China A00 aluminium ingot premium expected to ease from highs after national day holiday

In the final three trading days before the National Day holiday, the South China spot market stayed soft: aluminium prices continued to edge lower, the SHFE aluminium backwardation structure strengthened, and premiums over the next-month and far-month contracts were actually elevated. Ahead of the holiday, the willingness to cash out at the high basis was strong, and amid ongoing destocking, discount-priced cargoes still dominated spot circulation; demand was largely subdued, with only localized bargain-hunting replenishment and quite limited buying interest. On the whole, however, the high spot premium for aluminium ingots in South China remained largely intact. As of September 30, the SMM A00 aluminium (Foshan) spot premium over the 2610 contract stood at RMB 260 per tonne, still within...

Global aluminium industry gears up for ALUMINIUM 2026 in Düsseldorf with focus on recycling, innovation and demand

Four days to go, and the aluminium world is getting ready to move to Düsseldorf. From October 6-8, the city will host ALUMINIUM 2026 , with more than 800 exhibitors and partners and over 21,000 trade visitors expected at Messe Düsseldorf. The event will bring together producers, recyclers, downstream manufacturers, technology providers, equipment suppliers, policymakers and end users from across the global aluminium value chain. The 2026 edition comes at an important point for the aluminium industry. European producers are facing pressure from energy costs, international competition and tighter climate requirements, while concerns around raw material security and resilient supply chains continue to grow. At the same time, demand for aluminium is expanding across electric mobility,...

Aluminum Association launches “America Needs Aluminum” campaign

The Aluminum Association launched “America Needs Aluminum,” a new public awareness and advocacy campaign highlighting aluminum’s essential role in the US economy and calling for policies that help America make, recycle and build more with this critical material. The campaign centers on a straightforward message: America needs aluminum - let’s make more of it here. It builds on the association’s broader “all-of-the-above” strategy for aluminum supply, which calls for expanding both recycled and primary aluminum production, strengthening domestic manufacturing, improving energy availability and aggressively confronting unfair trade. “Aluminum is essential to nearly every part of modern American life - from our cars, homes and packaging to the power grid, fighter jets and advanced...

Consider Utkal E coal block for Nalco: Parliamentary committee to government

A Parliamentary committee today asked the government to consider allocation of Utkal--E coal block in Odisha to aluminium major Nalco as "it is crucial for the company's expansion plans". "The committee feels that allocation of Utkal-E coal block for Nalco is very crucial for the company in carrying out its expansion plans. The committee, therefore, strongly urges the government to favourably consider...," Standing Committee on Coal and Steel chaired by Rakesh Singh said in a report. The Utkal--E coal block is among the 204 de-allocated by the Supreme Court in September last year. The company, which was earlier weighing filig a review petition for the block, is exploring options of getting it back on the provisions of the recently passed MMDRA Act, which empowers the government to...

LME moves to cut warehouse queues faster

New measures to increase the amount of metal withdrawn from warehouses, relative to material brought in, will help to reduce queues faster at London Metal Exchange (LME) registered warehouses, the exchange said on Monday. The LME, the world's oldest and biggest market for industrial metals which is now owned by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd, oversees warehouses where companies that buy metals on its futures market can take delivery of quality-assured supplies if needed. Big banks and traders that own or owned warehouses and charge rent have profited from letting long queues build up. Some also keep huge stocks of aluminium tied up, unavailable to manufacturers, in long-term financing deals. Effective Aug. 1, the so-called decay factor under the Linked Load-In/Load-Out Rule (LILO)...

Aluminium collapse affects CSR Ltd's building boom

Despite surging new home building, tumbling aluminium premiums have cast doubts over CSR's earnings prospects ahead of the building products group's full-year result next month. As the Australian economy struggles to find growth to replace dwindling mining investment, new home building has been a rare bright spot with housing approvals and new starts soaring after years of underbuilding. Deustche Bank analyst Emily Smith expected 203,200 new homes will be started in fiscal 2015 and 205,600 new homes in fiscal 2016, ahead of consensus forecasts and well ahead of the historical average of 152,400 homes. "We remain optimistic on Australian housing demand on the basis of continued low interest rates, solid migration and reasonable employment," Ms Smith said. Ms Smith said that CSR had the...

Kenanga maintains "Outperform" on Press Metal

China’s government would remove export taxes on bars and rods of primary aluminium and aluminium-alloy from May 1, 2015, according to China daily. Kenanga Research said this would have a negligible impact on Chinese exports and aluminium premiums in Europe and US in the near term. It explained that despite the removal of export tax, Chinese aluminium is still less attractive for its pricing compared to international aluminium prices. “We gather that the 3-year average aluminium price is USD1,900 per tonne while the average Japan premium is USD293 per tone. Thus, all-in international aluminium price is about USD2,190 per tonne, 4.8% cheaper than that of China Shanghai 3-year average of USD2,300 per tonne,” it said. The research house said that most of China’s production is for its own...

Aluminum falls most in 10 weeks as China signals higher exports

Aluminum fell the most in two months on concern more exports from China of products made from the metal will exacerbate a global glut. China plans to scrap a 15 percent export tax on rods and strips made from primary aluminum effective May 1. The move may send world prices lower amid ample supplies in the Asian nation, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. “China is going to ensure it can support its aluminum sector,” David Wilson, an analyst at Citigroup Inc. in London, said in a telephone interview. “It’s going to keep the market in oversupply. As long as they are still making a margin, they will continue to export, which is not positive for prices.” Aluminum for delivery in three months fell 1.6 percent to settle at $1,777.50 a metric ton at 5:50 p.m. on the London Metal Exchange, the...

Press Metal likely to survive the supply glut effectively: say sources

Press Metal has not been having the best phase and the situation is threatening to get worse as China abolishes its export duty on non-alloyed and alloyed aluminium rods and bars starting next month. The company however seems undeterred as a close source to the company says, “We should be okay. We are operating at full capacity.” China’s overproduction and increased exports have already created a supply glut in the global aluminium market affecting the price of the metal. According to reports China has exported 43% more unwrought aluminium and aluminium products in the first quarter of this year amounting to 1.2 million tons. Concerns are arising about the company’s future in the face of this global supply glut although sources believe that Press Metal will not be much affected by the new...

Scraping China export taxes may worsen aluminium oversupply problem

Scraping China export taxes may worsen aluminium oversupply problem

China is already infamous for its excess production of aluminium causing a global oversupply hampering the aluminium prices. Now as they announce scraping the export taxes on some products, they may worsen the situation even further. While the world aluminium producers hurried to cut production to reduce supply and boost aluminium prices, China continued its relentless production despite facing crippling losses. Suffering aluminium smelters were buoyed by government subsidies creating a disparity in the global aluminium situation. The world aluminium industry, outside China, faced aluminium deficiency while China was in oversupply. Still the situation was in control because of China’s duty placed on the export of primary metal. Ma Kai, a Beijing-based analyst at China International...

Aluminium falls in China with other major metals as manufacturing shrinks

Aluminum fell the most in almost a month as most industrial metals retreated after a gauge of manufacturing strength slid to a 12-month low in China, the world’s biggest consumer. Aluminum lost as much as 1.2 percent, the biggest drop since March 27. HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics’ preliminary Purchasing Managers’ Index for Chinese manufacturing was at 49.2 for April, below the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey and the second month of contraction. Factory data for the euro region are due later in the day. “The fundamental economy is not improving” in China, said Helen Lau, a metals and mining analyst at Argonaut Securities Ltd. in Hong Kong. “It is a little worrying. We’re close to the bottom. Before that happens, the government should continue with stimulus until there is a...

Falling commodity prices pull down Inalum’s sales by 10% in Q1 2015

Global commodity prices have pulled down the sales of PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) by 10% in the first quarter of 2015. The fall in sales and the steadily declining premium price in the global market over the past two months has prompted the decision that the company will not be exporting the commodity this year said the PT Inalum President Director, Winardi Sunoto. Premiums have plummeted to US$ 250 per ton this March and April compared to the lucrative premium of $400 per ton in the corresponding period last year. That has led the company to not ship any product abroad in the first quarter of this year partly contributing to the 10% decline in sales. The company which in normal circumstances exports 8,000 tons on a quarterly basis is looking for other options, mainly aluminium...

Top global aluminium producer United Company Rusal said on Wednesday it was reviewing its aluminium smelting operations and may idle a further 200,000 tonnes of capacity. Rusal, which has cut capacity by 800,000 tonnes in the past two years, said its first quarter aluminium production came in at 900,000 tonnes, down two percent on the previous quarter, but up two percent on a year ago. The Hong Kong-listed company said it expected calendar 2015 production to be flat on the previous year. Deputy CEO Oleg Mukhamedshin said in March that Rusal was considering shuttering some production due to the weak price outlook and a desire to shift production to cleaner energy sources. The company is looking to have almost all of its production using electricity from hydroelectric power plants. The...
