Cumulative exports for January-August totalled 167,500 tonnes, up 9.26 per cent year-on-year....

Mexico reiterates its stand against proposal steel & aluminium quotas; demands removal of tariffs

Mexico’s Deputy Economy Minister Luz Maria de la Mora said to reporters on Monday that they are against the proposed steel and aluminium quotas and demanded complete removal of tariffs on those products under U.S. Section 232. He insisted that the tariffs cannot be replaced by any quota system. "The Mexican government's position is that the application of the 232 on steel and aluminum is not justified," he said to the reporters. Mexico has been consistently fighting against the tariffs claiming that they are damaging the trade equation in North America. On March 12, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said that the US is working on a plan to lift tariffs from Mexican and Canadian steel and aluminium. However, they wish to continue with the gains that U.S. domestic producers have...

Chinese spot aluminium premiums show restraint today amidst lowered transactions

Shanghai Metals Market found spot aluminium premiums continuing at the same price today, on March 26, as trades in east China remained muted in the morning. Traders were reluctant in purchasing that primarily accounted for a lacklustre spot aluminium trading. In Shanghai, spot aluminium transactions were mostly heard at RMB 13,940 per tonne to RMB 13,950 per tonne today, down from the transaction of RMB 13,950 per tonne to RMB 13,970 per tonne on Monday, March 25. But premiums over the front-month April contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange remained unchanged from yesterday at RMB 320 per tonne to RMB 340 per tonne. In Wuxi and Hangzhou, on the other hand, spot deals mostly occurred at RMB 13,940 per tonne to RMB 13,950 per tonnes and RMB 13,970 per tonne to RMB 13,980 per tonne this...

The US dollar traded lower as the US government bond yields extended their decline from last week on fears of slower global growth. Base metals ended mixed and both LME and SHFE aluminium dropped overnight. LME registered the third consecutive loss yesterday to close at US$1856 per tonne after the contract reached its highest last week after the news of cyber-attack on Hydro. Given limited upward momentum, LME aluminium slid after it increased to the highest overnight at US$1,899 per tonne. The contract is likely to trade at US$1,840-1,900 per tonne today. As on March 25, LME aluminium cash (bid) price stood at US$ 1855.50 per tonne, LME official settlement price stands at US$ 1856 per tonne; 3-months bid price stands at US$ 1886 per tonne, 3-months offer price is US$ 1887 per tonne; Dec...

Chinese prebaked anode prices to extend decline in April on weaker demand

Shanghai Metals Market found commercial used prebaked anode prices across China to likely extend its decline in April on weaker demand. With sufficient inventories, most aluminium producers had been found purchasing prebaked anode cautiously. Prebaked anode stocks at a large aluminium producer currently stand at over 30 days, SMM learned. Meanwhile, carbon producers struggled to lower their inventories of the prebaked anode and for doing so, some carbon producers even went ahead and lowered offers below market prices so that more and more aluminium producers indulge in buying their cargoes. Moreover, environmental probes remained strict in the two consecutive sessions, resulting in some carbon producers in Shandong and Henan to cut production as they failed to meet emission standards....

LME aluminium fell last night after dollar rebounded to a three-day high; SHFE also drops to 40-day moving average

The US dollar rebounded and regained most of the ground lost in the previous session, to a nearly three-day high of 96.63, as Brexit concerns weighed on the euro and sterling. Base metals ended mostly lower. LME aluminium fell 1.63% and aluminium went down 0.47%. LME aluminium continued upward trend on news of supply disruptions; SHFE likely to trade higher today

The US dollar fell sharply against a basket of major currencies on Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve held US interest rates steady and its policymakers abandoned projections for further rate hikes this year as the central bank flagged an expected slowdown in the economy. LME base metals, except for aluminium, traded higher on Wednesday. SHFE aluminium crept 0.15%. The three-month LME aluminium rose to a new three-month high of RMB 1,951per tonne on Wednesday, bolstered by the report that Rio Tinto suspended operations at its bauxite mine in north Australia due to a cyclone. LME aluminium later pared those gains to close the trading day 0.26% lower at US$1,935 per tonne. Norsk Hydro reported some progress in restoring operations after it was hit by a cyber-attack.
