North American aluminum demand returned to growth in the first half of 2026, but the recovery has exposed a widening gap between market consumption and domestic production. Rising imports of semi-fabricated aluminum products, particularly sheet, have supported regional demand as shipments from US and Canadian producers continue to weaken. According to preliminary industry estimates, aluminum demand across the United States and Canada increased 3.5% Year-on-Year through June 2026, reaching an estimated 13.57 billion pounds (6.16 million metric tonnes), compared with 13.12 billion pounds (5.95 million metric tonnes) during the corresponding period of 2025. The improvement marks a reversal from the previous year's contraction, although imports rather than stronger domestic mill shipments...

During the second quarter, a famed fund manager in China made strategic moves in his investment portfolio. He increased his stakes in China Hongqiao Group, the world's second-largest aluminium producer, and the short-video platform Kuaishou Technology. At the same time, he opted to reduce his holdings in Chinese real estate. These actions shed light on skilled money managers' approaches to navigating challenging market conditions. The first among the top-ranked money managers to reveal their second-quarter portfolio reports was Qiu Dongrong at Zhonggeng Fund Management in Shanghai. Despite facing challenges such as the unprecedented Shanghai lockdown and the Ukraine-Russia geopolitical crisis, China's star fund managers remain optimistic about the world's second-largest stock market. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China’s primary aluminium production grew year-on-year in June 2023 as smelters resumed operations in southwestern Yunnan province after the ease of local power usage restrictions. As per the data released by NBS, China produced 3.46 million tonnes of primary aluminium in June, which reflected an increase of 2.9 per cent from a year ago. The daily average output amounted to 115,333 tonnes, up by 4.54 per cent from 110,323 tonnes in May. Yunnan began lifting power usage restrictions late last month following more rains in the region as that could generate a higher amount of hydropower. Around 500,000 tonnes of annual capacity returned to operations in the second quarter, according to Chen Xinlin, a senior consultant at Metals & Mining...

According to the letter sent to members, European Aluminium, the voice of the European aluminium industry, has considered actively lobbying for European Union sanctions on Russian aluminium but would oppose explicitly targeting the Russian aluminium giant Rusal. The group drafted an internal memorandum for planning purposes, lacking any knowledge regarding imminent sanctions from the European Union. However, the European Commission chose not to provide any comments on the matter. According to Reuters, a letter revealed that discussions were held among members of European Aluminium regarding the potential action of "advocating for EU sanctions on Russian aluminium." A letter dated July 2023 mentions the potential implementation of restrictive measures on Russian aluminium under the scope...

According to our report from China's Yunnan province, the region has added 1 million tonnes of primary aluminium with the restart of four aluminium smelters. Out of which, Yunnan Aluminum Co. Ltd. is the most significant producer, with 600,000 tonnes added so far. Henan Shenhuo Coal & Power Co. Ltd. and Hongtai Aluminium have added 380,000, while Qiya Aluminium has contributed just 40,000 tonnes. In the meantime, the insufficient rainfall in Sichuan province has resulted in a reduction in aluminium production. Our sources indicate that two aluminium smelters have been instructed to decrease their output, albeit the total reduction amounts to only 50,000 tonnes when combined. According to our analysis, a significant amount of aluminium still needs to be included in the Chinese aluminium...

European aluminium manufacturers made concerns about a possible breach in the European Union's carbon border tax (CBAM), which might allow severely polluting exporters such as China and other Asian nations to avoid rules and inundate the union with cheap heavy metal emissions. The BlueGreen Alliance, a non-profit organisation located in Washington, released a paper outlining suggestions for addressing the decline in the primary aluminium sector in the United States. The research focuses on satisfying the growing demand for aluminium from the renewable energy industry, generating well-paying jobs, improving national security, and lowering industrial emissions. The mining and metals firm, headquartered in Perth, South32, has been working on an ambitious project at the Hillside Smelter to...

China’s aluminium production in June 2023 (30 calendar days) stood at 3.37 million tonnes, reflecting a drop of 2.94 per cent M-o-M from 3.472 million tonnes, found the Shanghai Metals Market survey. However, on a year-on-year calculation, the output in June 2023 edged a marginal rise of 0.14 per cent, showed SMM. The share of liquid aluminium output dropped 3.5 percentage points M-o-M to 72 per cent in June as aluminium smelters cut the share of liquid aluminium output in response to poor demand. The domestic daily average aluminium production in June stood steady M-o-M at 112,200 tonnes despite a fall in monthly production. SMM data also showed the total domestic production in the first six months of the year (H1) amounted to 20.11 million tonnes, up by 2.81 per cent year-on-year....

Japanese primary aluminium premium in the September quarter is less likely to change much from the previous quarter, given a buyer has recently agreed to pay a premium of $127.5 per tonne to a global producer over the benchmark price for shipments, said a source on Tuesday, July 11, involved in the pricing talks. The offer has been made after several rounds of negotiations whereby producers sought to raise premiums from the earlier quarter, but buyers pushed to cut levels, said a source at a Japanese trading house. The amount is close to the premium of $125-130 per tonne paid in the June quarter but lower than the initial offers of $165-180 per tonne made by producers. However, compared to the premium of $95-105 per tonne offered in Q1, the recommended premium for Q3 is higher by over 20...

Headquartered in Perth, South32, the mining and metals company has been working on an ambitious project in the Hillside Smelter to decrease GTC stack Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) emissions to 0,5 mg/Nm³ by April 2025 to meet new environmental regulations. Following the installation of the first Alumina Cascade Feeding System on one Gas Treatment Centre (GTC) earlier this year, fives has reaffirmed its plan to deploy the solution on four other GTCs, as well as to convert its VIBRAIR pocket filters into Extended Surface Bags. Incorporating the now-famous technology of the "Extended Surface Bag" into GTC has several benefits, including increased filtering surface, increased pollution treatment capacity, decreased system pressure drop, and decreased HF stack emissions. At the start of the year,...

As agreed, Azerbaijan will play an active role in collecting capital for the construction of the Tajik Aluminium Company (TALCO) and exporting alumina to Tajikistan. In return, Azerbaijan will secure aluminium, cryolite, and aluminium fluoride from Tajikistan. Azerbaijan and Tajikistan entered into this agreement after the sixth session of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation on July 7. The deal outlines bilateral cooperation and sets the stage...

The BlueGreen Alliance, a non-profit organization based in Washington, has recently published a report presenting recommendations to address the downward trend in the primary aluminium industry in the United States. The report focuses on meeting the increasing demand for aluminium from the clean energy sector, creating well-compensated employment opportunities, enhancing national security, and reducing industrial emissions. Despite recognizing the benefits of secondary aluminium production, the organization highlights the insufficiency of scrap supplies, indicating a greater need for primary aluminium production. The BlueGreen Alliance unites labour unions and environmental organizations to solve today’s environmental challenges in ways that create and maintain quality jobs and build a...
