Niche metal firm Ess Dee Aluminium forges on path to profit

About a decade and a half ago, when the country was witnessing big investments in telecom, IT and consumer goods, these young, first-generation industrialists, mostly based in the mineral-rich eastern states, started rolling out niche products for which competitors were few and the returns high.
Ess Dee Aluminium is a success story. The pharma packaging firm set up manufacturing units close to its clients, even as leading packaging companies such as India Foils faltered. Ess Dee eventually acquired IFL from Sterlite Industries in 1998, and under CEO Sudip Dutta has restarted two of its largest factories.
