Middle East will produce 5m tonnes of aluminium in 2015
The Middle East will produce 5 million tonnes of primary aluminium by 2015, compared with 3.7 million tonnes in 2012, according to the Gulf Aluminium Council (GAC).

The region will produce 1.8 million tonnes of value-added aluminium products, compared with 1.2 million tonnes in 2012, Mahmood Daylami, the GAC's secretary general, told delegates at Metal Bulletin’s 3rd Asian Bauxite and Alumina conference on Wednesday October 30.

“Out of the total primary aluminium produced in the Gulf Co-operation Council states, 70% is exported to international markets and 30% to downstream markets, which export 50% of their products,” he said.

The GCC currently imports about 8 million tpy of alumina, and that is likely to rise to 10 million tpy by 2015, he added.

Only Saudi Arabia has reserves of bauxite and alumina, and by 2015 it should produce 1.8 million tpy of alumina, Daylami said, referring to the Alcoa-Ma’aden joint venture in Ras Al Khair.

The UAE is looking to develop an alumina refinery and is conducting feasibility studies for this, according to local media reports.

“However, the Gulf will remain a net importer of bauxite and alumina in the foreseeable future,” Daylami said.
