Lagersmith's $10 million direct-to-can printing facility breaks ground, set to boost beverage industry

Lagersmith Can Supply Co. conducted the groundbreaking ceremony of the $10 million facility to house its direct-to-can printing factory and distribution centre. It is expected to be fully operational in early 2024. Lagersmith, based in Minnesota, specialises in printing on aluminium cans using cutting-edge direct-to-can printing technology. Beer, sodas, teas, kombuchas, and ready-to-drink cocktails are popular among its clientele.

The organisation is expanding its operations by acquiring a warehouse and production facility spanning 25,000 square feet. This facility is located within the Bark Creek Industrial Park in Fremont. The establishment of the new Lagersmith facility is projected to provide over 20 employment opportunities within three years.

“I’m proud of our team’s work that made this production facility a possibility. I hope it provides a great service to the beverage industry, and prosperous job opportunities for decades to come,” said Nathan Smith, founder of Lagersmith, at Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony.

One of the factors that influenced Lagersmith's decision to select Fremont as its location was its proximity to Ardagh Metal Packaging, a supplier with operations in Fremont, as well as Huron and Lucas counties.

Smith stated that the company aims to be a market leader in sustainable single-use package options. Many beverage companies embellish aluminium cans with a plastic label or shrink sleeve. The Fremont factory will eliminate that requirement, decreasing trash by diverting 250 tonnes of plastic annually from landfills.

In 2012, Smith established Lagersmith as a mobile bottling enterprise catering specifically to nearby craft breweries. Initially, he commenced the enterprise operation solitary, utilising the rear section of his Toyota 4Runner as a workspace.

The Fremont facility will accommodate several functions, including installing a digital printer, providing office spaces, allocating warehousing areas, and providing loading docks. Lagersmith intends to issue $10 million towards developing its upcoming plant, encompassing the procurement of equipment and machinery. The company has partnered with Janotta & Herner to serve as the general contractor for the project.
