Rod is the founder and CEO of GlassPoint. For more than three decades, Rod has led global companies across the United States, Europe, China, and the Middle East. Rod’s companies have partnered with various multinational corporations in the energy and technology industries, including Royal Dutch Shell, AT&T, Intel, and Volkswagen.
His first company received the Queen of England’s Award for Technical Achievement and the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement and subsequently went public on NASDAQ.
AL Circle: Can you provide an overview of GlassPoint's partnership with the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia (MISA) to build a solar manufacturing facility in the Eastern Province? How does this partnership contribute to decarbonising industrial process heat in the Middle East, particularly in the aluminium industry?
Rod MacGregor: Late last year, we announced a partnership with the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia (MISA) to build a solar manufacturing facility in the Eastern Province. Technology manufactured in the facility will be used for projects in metals/mining, building materials, and additional industrial sectors – including GlassPoint's project with mining champion Ma'aden. The manufacturing facility will support technology exports throughout the region, helping to decarbonise aluminium manufacturing as well as other heavy industries.
That's critical as top miners worldwide have committed to net-zero goals. Saudi Arabia has also set goals to reach net zero by 2060. Our factory will help both groups make headway to achieve their commitments.
AL Circle: What is the expected annual production capacity of the solar manufacturing facility in terms of renewable energy technology, and how will it impact the Aluminium industry in the region?
Rod MacGregor: Once complete, the manufacturing facility will produce enough renewable energy technology annually to generate 5,000 tonnes of solar steam each day, enough to offset four million MMBTus of gas and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
We already have an MOU with MA’ADEN to deploy this technology at their alumina refinery and expect to attract more aluminium producers as we build capacity.
AL Circle: How does the facility aim to generate 5,000 tonnes of solar steam daily, and what significance does this hold for reducing carbon emissions in industrial processes?
Rod MacGregor: GlassPoint's new factory will help spread renewable energy across the Kingdom and the region, replacing fossil fuels with solar steam to improve the climate impact of hard-to-abate industries and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
AL Circle: Could you elaborate on how the technology manufactured in the facility will be applied specifically in the metals & mining, building materials, and other industrial sectors, focusing on the Aluminium industry?
Rod MacGregor: Industrial process heat is a $444 billion market. Typically, industrial companies make heat or steam by burning fuel like coal or natural gas. Solar thermal technology instead uses giant mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a pipe full of water, creating steam. Industrial companies get the same steam they need but eliminate emissions.
AL Circle: In what ways will the solar process steam plant developed in collaboration with the Saudi Arabian Mining Company (MA'ADEN) benefit the Aluminium industry in the region?
Rod MacGregor: Ma'aden Solar I will be the largest industrial solar thermal project in the world. The project will help the mining champion reduce carbon emissions by over 600,000 tonnes annually while saving 12,000,000 mm of BTUs of gas. This represents an over 50% reduction in Ma'aden's alumina refinery and a 4% reduction of the company's overall carbon footprint. It also marks important headway toward helping the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia achieve climate goals.
Many industrial leaders have yet to be able to see solar thermal in action to resolve concerns about potential deployment. GlassPoint's newly announced Technology Showcase with Ma'aden will help leaders across the Middle East understand and preview GlassPoint's positive impact on operations, which we believe will drive further adoption in the aluminium sector as well as other industrial markets.
AL Circle: How does GlassPoint plan to support technology exports throughout the region, and what role does the manufacturing facility play in diversifying the Kingdom's economy?
Rod MacGregor: We plan to export solar thermal technology manufactured in the facility throughout the region to support more solar thermal projects. That helps to diversify the Kingdom's economy and deepen its leadership as a technology export hub.
AL Circle; Can you elaborate on the potential economic impact of this partnership on the Aluminium industry and the broader industrial landscape in the Middle East?
Rod MacGregor: Sustainably-produced aluminium is already commanding a price premium while helping to avoid tariffs in places like the EU. We expect that aluminium producers will quickly grow fond of these economic advantages in the market.
Moreover, GlassPoint's partnership with MISA will help deepen the Kingdom's leadership in climate technology across the region. The partnership is part of MISA's Global Supply Chain Resilience Initiative, which aims to attract strategic supply chains to Saudi Arabia and expand the Kingdom's market share in sectors essential to combating climate change.
AL Circle: What specific technological expertise does GlassPoint bring to the table, and how is it crucial to deploying scale solutions to decarbonise industrial heat? How does GlassPoint's technology stand out as the only solution proven at scale for industrial heat decarbonisation?
Rod MacGregor: GlassPoint is the only solar solution proven at scale to reduce carbon emissions from industrial process heat. The company has built more than half of the industrial solar steam capacity in the world, including a 340MWth plant that's been operating reliably in Oman for more than five years.
GlassPoint systems are the most compelling solution to deliver industrial heat. Legacy fuels such as gas are more than twice as expensive than GlassPoint and of course offer no decarbonisation.
GlassPoint's solutions are half the cost of a photovoltaic system with an electric boiler and more than three times more efficient. They can produce triple the steam as photovoltaic on the same amount of land and, when paired with GlassPoint's Unify storage system, double the rate of decarbonisation compared to PV plus batteries.
In the past few months, GlassPoint has unveiled a range of technology enhancements that have driven down system costs by more than 30%.
AL Circle: Are there plans for further collaborations or expansions in the Middle East's aluminium industry or perhaps in other industrial sectors? How does GlassPoint envision the role of the solar manufacturing facility in shaping the future of renewable energy adoption and sustainability in the region?
Rod MacGregor: GlassPoint currently has a strong project pipeline with more than 40 projects focused on the Middle East and North America, including planned projects with leaders in the aluminium industry. These deals total more than $12B in potential revenue across various sectors seeking to decarbonize. I look forward to sharing more news on our future plans for various industrial sectors!
