Hindalco Industries is moving to structured digital tenders for spot sales of metallurgical-grade alumina in a bid to improve transparency, broaden market participation and strengthen price discovery in the global alumina market. The company is partnering with Metalshub for the initiative through its subsidiary Utkal Alumina International.

The move comes as the alumina market continues to lack the transparent, transaction-based pricing mechanism available for aluminium. Hindalco said only around 10 per cent of the 55–60 million tonnes of alumina traded globally each year in the third-party market is sold through spot transactions, even though those sales can influence benchmark prices for a much larger volume of long-term contracts.

Hindalco moves alumina spot sales to digital bidding

Hindalco currently sells alumina through a combination of long-term contracts and spot transactions, with spot sales handled through a standard request-for-quotation process. The new digital tendering system will replace that process with structured electronic bidding within defined tender windows.

The Metalshub platform is designed to allow a wider group of qualified buyers to participate in competitive bidding for individual spot cargoes. The resulting transactions will provide firm data on actual market activity rather than relying solely on voluntarily reported deals.

Hindalco said its first digital tender is expected between October and December 2026, with the exact date, quantity and tender specifications to be communicated to registered participants in advance.

Saurabh Khedekar, CEO of Hindalco's Alumina Business, said the initiative is intended to broaden market participation, strengthen competitive price discovery and improve efficiency and transparency in the global alumina market.

Digital tenders could support new alumina price benchmarks

The initiative could also provide a pathway towards more transaction-based alumina price references. Metalshub is working with LME Insight to support price discovery for critical raw materials, while the London Metal Exchange has expressed support for the development of independent, transaction-led price references.

The LME launched an alumina contract in 2019, but trading activity has remained limited. The CME also has an alumina contract, although activity has been sporadic, according to Reuters.

A larger pool of verifiable spot transactions could therefore help address one of the key challenges facing alumina benchmarks: limited observable market activity.

Alumina pricing faces a widening market disconnect

Alumina was historically priced as a percentage of the aluminium price, but the market shifted towards spot-based pricing and independent assessments. Reuters noted that limited spot-market activity has made it difficult for price reporting agencies to build comprehensive benchmarks.

The pricing challenge has become more significant as alumina and aluminium markets have increasingly followed different trajectories. Rising alumina production in regions such as Indonesia, alongside plans to expand alumina production in Guinea, is adding to changes in global supply and trade flows, while aluminium production growth has been more constrained.

Against this backdrop, Hindalco's digital tender initiative could create a larger pool of verifiable transaction data for the alumina market. The company, Metalshub and LME Insight are working towards a model that could strengthen price discovery and potentially support the development of more effective tools for managing alumina price risk.
