Erma First, a worldwide leader in sustainable marine solutions, has introduced a new energy-saving device (ESD) titled the Flexcap that offers lower fuel consumption and emissions following CII and EEXI standards. The ESD is made of nickel-aluminium bronze, the metallic alloy many propellers use.
Flexcap is an energy-saving device (ESD) that improves marine efficiency and sustainability by using the proven capabilities of propeller boss cap fins. The technique lessens the propeller hub vortex, lowers torque, and directs more energy back into the propulsion drive train as thrust by allowing fins to collect and absorb spinning water force.

It is exceptionally robust and may even increase the service life of the propeller by decreasing cavitation. It may also reduce propeller-induced noise and vibrations, which harm marine life.
Konstantinos Stampedakis, ERMA FIRST Co-Founder and Managing Director, said, "Meeting the IMO's long-term emissions-reduction targets will rely on a range of solutions including alternative fuels and optimised vessel design, but as a practical and cost-effective means of achieving regulatory compliance, ESDs also have a major part to play. ERMA FIRST FLEXCAP is easy to install, maintain and repair and facilitates significant reductions in fuel consumption and emissions. It is a breakthrough in maritime ESDs."
With ship owners looking for practical and cost-effective tools to help them comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Carbon Intensity Index (CII) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), Erma First's new solution promises to improve CII and EEXI performance by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The introduction of Flexcap demonstrates Erma First's commitment to assisting the maritime industry's green transition and decarbonisation path by broadening and increasing its product portfolio. The business specialising in ballast water treatment systems launched an alternative marine power solution, Blue Connect, in August 2022.
