Emirates Global Aluminium’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, adjacent to EGA’s Al Taweelah smelter and Khalifa Port is almost complete with 60 per cent of construction over for the Calciners section. The overall construction of the $3bn refinery is 37 per cent complete with about 6,000 to 10,000 manpower engaged in the work.
The refinery is a part of UAE’s recent expansion programme in the upstream section of the aluminium value chain and it is only the second refinery to be built in the Middle East. The Al Taweelah plant will refine about five million tonnes of bauxite ore annually which will be imported each year from the Republic of Guinea.

EGA’s Al Taweelah smelter project is one of the largest single-site aluminium smelters in the world. The Al Taweelah alumina refinery is expected to be ready for operation in the first quarter of 2018. The refinery will have a capacity of two million tpy of alumina and that will fulfil about three-quarters of the alumina requirement by the Al Taweelah smelter.
Commenting on the development work of the smelter, Abdulla Kalban, EGA’s managing director and chief executive officer, said: “We are creating an aluminium value chain for the UAE, and our partners such as Guinea, that stretches around the world. Al Taweelah alumina refinery is an important link in that chain. It creates jobs, economic opportunity and scope for further industrial development both at home and abroad. I am pleased that the project, and Outotec’s part in it, is proceeding so well.”

EGA’s executive vice president for upstream, Yousuf Bastaki complemented his view: “The Al Taweelah alumina refinery is a major investment by EGA in the future of the UAE’s aluminium industry. Producing alumina in Abu Dhabi, and mining bauxite in Guinea, will enable us to manage the cost of this important resource. That means the potential of the aluminium industry to contribute to the growth of our economy will be secured.”
Outotec is one of the technology providers for the project responsible for the design and delivery of the calciners to the alumina refinery. Markku Teräsvasara, chief executive officer of Outotec, said: “We are proud that Outotec was offered the opportunity to participate in this important project and are working hard to live up to the trust that the UAE has placed in us.”
The refinery is expected to create almost 600 permanent jobs for UAE Nationals, which will cover about 100 supervisory, engineering, technical and professional roles.
