A Canadian company has signed an agreement with Guyana to mine bauxite in a western region of the country. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds says the First Bauxite Corporation of Vancouver expects to mine more than 12 million tons (11 million metric tons) of refractory bauxite in unexplored deposits in the Essequibo region. CEO Hilbert Shields said the company hopes to build a plant within 18 months. He said initial production levels will stand at 100,000 tons (90,700 metric tons) a year. Hinds said refractory bauxite is in demand because it is used to manufacture products that can withstand intense heat for extended periods. The western Essequibo Region has an estimated 1.6 million tons (1.45 million metric tons) of bauxite.
The Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) announced Sunday that its subsidiary, Maaden Bauxite and Alumina Company, has signed a $1 billion (SR3.75 billion) financing agreement with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) for the second phase of its aluminum project. The second phase, which includes a bauxite mine at Al-Baitha and an alumina refinery at Ras Al-Khair, will cost SR13.445 billion. The PIF loan will be repaid over a period of 16 years, starting in 2017. The project, a joint venture between Maaden (74.9 percent) and Alcoa (25.1 percent) is being built in two phases, both of which are now under construction. Intercept Minerals (ASX: IZM) has agreed the principal terms for a farm-in agreement with Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) over Intercept’s Tiwi Islands bauxite project. Intercept has an exploration licence covering 1,431 square kilometres of land under application in northeast region of Melville Island, within the Tiwi Islands. Rio will spend $ 5 million over four years to earn a 75% interest in the Tiwi Islands tenement as well as paying a sign on fee of $50,000 to Intercept upon signing a formal farm-in agreement. Rio Tinto today received Canadian Competition Bureau clearance for its offer, made through an indirect wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary, to acquire all the common shares of Hathor Exploration Limited ("Hathor") for C$4.70 in cash per common share. Ghana’s producer-price inflation rate fell for the first month in October as mining and quarrying costs decreased. Inflation eased to 16.8 percent from 19.6 percent a month earlier, Grace Bediako, head of the Ghana Statistical Service, told reporters in Accra, the capital, today. Prices fell 0.9 percent in the month, she said. The increase in mining and quarrying costs, which account for 14 percent of the overall index, slowed to 31.6 percent from 50.7 percent in September, Bediako said. Manufacturing costs, which make up 70 percent of the index, increased 16.9 percent in October, compared with 16.6 percent, while utility costs rose 8 percent from 7.7 percent in September, Bediako said.
