Bahrain's aluminium powder and flakes export drops YoY on increased domestic consumption

EDITED BY : BEETHIKA BISWAS 2MINS READ

Bahrain is one of the fast growing countries in the Middle East that is shifting to the non-oil sector for revenue generation. Full-year non-oil growth in Bahrain for 2018 is seen exceeding the 4% mark recorded in 2017, according to the latest Bahrain Economic Quarterly published by the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). The kingdom reached an annual pace of 3.6% for the first three quarters of 2017 — improving on the 3.2% recorded in 2016 as a whole and making Bahrain the fastest-growing economy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Bahrain along with producing primary aluminium is focusing on expanding its downstream products. The country produces aluminium powder and flakes for surface treatments and for 3D printing.

Let us analyse the patterns for Aluminium Powder and Flakes export Bahrain in last three years to understand the market demand and domestic consumption trends. We are also trying to estimate the volume to be exported in the first ten months of 2018.

Bahrain has been following a slightly downward pattern for Aluminium Powder and Flakes export in last three years. In the year 2015, exports of aluminium for Aluminium Powder and Flakes stood at about 7549 tonnes. The volume dropped to 6586 tonnes in 2016. For 2017, bar rod & profile export is estimated to stand at about 5773 tonnes.  The estimated export volume for the first ten months of 2018 stands at 4340 tonnes, subjected to any change in consumption pattern of the importing countries as well as the domestic companies.

Revenue from Aluminium Powder and Flakes export has been also on a downward trend. Revenue from Aluminium Powder and Flakes export stood at USD 22 million in 2015 which slightly dropped to USD 17 million in 2016. The revenue fell further to USD 16 million in 2017 and expected to stand at an estimated value of USD 11 million for the first ten months of 2018.

Bahrain Atomizers International, established in 1973 was the first significant downstream venture in Baharain. It produces 7,000 tons of atomized aluminium powder per year which is exported to Japan, Germany, UK and USA.   The country’s exports are mainly driven by countries like USA, India and Germany and Japan.  Falling export indicates more consumption by the domestic companies who use them for anodizing and coating purpose primarily.
