AVK Group's valve solution powers new hydropower plant in Uganda

EDITED BY : RUPANKAR MAJUMDER 2MINS READ

The Kigwabya hydropower plant in Uganda, with a peak power capacity of 4.6MW, has selected Orbinox, a part of the AVK Group, to provide critical valve solutions for its operations. Orbinox has a strong presence in Africa, contributing to over 100 dam and hydropower projects, including the historic Owen Falls Hydroelectric Project, now known as the Nalubaale Dam, where Glenfield Valves played a significant role in 1954.

The collaboration between Kigwabya and Orbinox was initiated in January 2023 through a business and employment-focused social media platform interaction with the project's site manager. The manager, impressed by Orbinox's track record in the African market for dams and hydropower, chose the company for critical valve solutions.

In the implementation of the Kigwabya project, Orbinox has played a pivotal role by supplying a comprehensive range of high-quality hydraulic control components tailored to the specific requirements of the hydroelectric facility. The four bi-directional MU wall-mounted sluice gates, each measuring 2000 x 2000 mm and constructed from durable stainless steel, are equipped with hydraulic actuators. These gates serve a crucial function as both dam gates and intake gates, ensuring precise control over water flow for optimal power generation. Additionally, a single bi-directional MU wall-mounted sluice gate, sized at 1000 x 1000 mm and composed of stainless steel, has been integrated with hydraulic actuators, functioning as a flush gate to facilitate seamless operations within the plant.

Orbinox has also provided essential manual and automated knife gate valves for efficient flow control. The DN300 EXV knife gate valve is designed for manual operation, offering flexibility in managing water passage. Meanwhile, the DN600 EXV knife gate valve, equipped with a hydraulic actuator, enhances the automation and precision of water regulation processes.

To further enhance the system, two SA stoplogs have been supplied, which are 2200 x 1600 mm each and crafted from lightweight yet robust aluminium. These stoplogs find application in the tailrace channel downstream of the powerhouse, contributing to the overall effectiveness and reliability of the hydroelectric infrastructure. Orbinox's comprehensive supply of specialized components underscores their commitment to delivering tailored solutions that meet the specific demands of the Kigwabya project, ensuring its success and longevity in sustainable energy generation.
