Novelis receives final clearance from European Commission for Aleris acquisition

Atlanta-based world-leading aluminium rolling and recycling firm Novelis Inc. announced today, on April 8, about the receipt of the final clearance needed to complete the acquisition of Aleris Corporation, a global supplier of rolled aluminium products. Thus, it will now move expeditiously to close the buying deal. Earlier, the European Commission had governed a rule that Novelis could acquire Aleris if the former divested Aleris’ plant in Duffel, Belgium, to a third party approved by the Commission. Novelis met the condition, and therefore, the European Commission determined Liberty House Group a suitable buyer of the Duffel facility. The purchase price of the Duffel facility is €310 million. COVID19 outbreak fuelling the worldwide aluminium slow demand: Bloomberg Intelligence suggests

The downfall in the aluminium industry could be traced back to the global financial crisis last year that forced many automobile companies and the construction projects to reduce or shut operations, resulting in demand crunch for the lightweight metal, according to Bloomberg observation. The outbreak of COVID19 has just further triggered the ailing of aluminium demand, leading to production curtails at many downstream and end-use aluminium plants. Bloomberg Intelligence suggests that since the demand was slowing down, a surplus in stocks was well expected this year, even before the current pandemic. The price has been declining as well, which is now below $1500 per tonne, making most of the world’s production unprofitable. According to Bloomberg, the industry is currently working through...

Queensland Government approves NAIF’s $4.75 million loan facility for Metro Bauxite Stage 2 Expansion

The Queensland Treasury has reportedly informed Metro Mining Limited that the State Government has decided to not exercise veto right regarding the Metro's Bauxite Hills Mine Expansion proposal. In late 2019, the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) had announced to offer a Loan Facility of up to $47.5 million to Metro Mining for its Bauxite Hills Mine stage 2 expansion to 6 million wet metric tonnes per annum. But the key condition was the Queensland Government’s consideration of the project and its agreement for the approved funds to be advanced. The $4.75 million loan facility is supposed to fund the construction and mobilisation of a floating terminal as part of the stage 2 expansion, which is a critical part of Metro’s medium to long term growth. Metro Mining's Managing...

New Zealand Aluminium Smelter making its own hand sanitiser to combat COVID19 pandemic

Following World Health Organisation guidelines, New Zealand Aluminium Smelter Limited is making 103 litres of own hand sanitiser from its onsite laboratory. Smelter asset optimisation superintendent Roget Hackett said they collected the ingredients like ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and glycerol under WHO guidelines and mixed in their lab. Although the smelter is not considered an essential service, yet it is exempted from the four-week lockdown, considering the extensive costs involved in shutting down and restarting all the pots. However, the smelter has adopted several precautions for continuing operations during the pandemic, such as dividing workers into two teams – blue and red and letting them work separately as much as possible with separate entry and exit points into the factory....

Effect of COVID19 on Indian Aluminium Industry

On Tuesday, March 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a countrywide lockdown for 21 days starting Tuesday midnight. Since the announcement, no report of production cuts at smelters and refineries of three major Indian aluminium giants have arrived so far, except that Hindalco has temporarily scaled down operations at some of its aluminium and copper manufacturing facilities in line with the government's directives, according to a report last week. The government has, however, exempted key production facilities from having a continuous production process during the lockdown. Reports say there is enough availability of raw material and consumable stock with the plant premises for the next 15 days, at least, which is helping carry out the production seamlessly. The government has...
