Aluminum fueled fire sparked in shop

Fire officials in Mount Airy are trying to determine what sparked a 2-alarm fire, Tuesday evening.
The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company responded to Phase, Inc., a sheet metal fabrication shop in the 1600 block of Back Acre Circle in response to call call for service.
Once the first crews arrived at the sheet metal fabrication warehouse, workers told them that there was aluminum dust that had caught on fire.
Since aluminum dust is a metal, firefighters could not put the fire out with just water, instead they were required to use a 'Class D' extinguisher which is used to put out fires involving metals.
Crews were forced to contain the fire and let it burn itself out.
Due to the heat, the intensity of the fire and the potential for explosion fire crews did call a second alarm.
All together it took 35 fire trucks and units, and more than 75 firefighters almost two hours to put the fire out.
Crews are still trying to ventilate the metal building.
There were no reports of any injures during the fire.
