Of the samples shipped, one was gamma crystalline-phase HPA, production of which could enable Orbite to target a broader, higher-volume customer base. The Odisha Pollution Control Board (OPCB) has extended, for another five years, the consent to establish period for expansion of Vedanta alumina refinery project which is facing huge losses due to raw material shortages. China imported 386,000 mt of alumina in November, down 33.6% MoM, customs data showed. Three factors led to the decline. First, imported alumina enjoyed no price advantage over domestic alumina. FOB price of Australian alumina was USD 203/mt in late December, which is equivalent to over RMB 1,700/mt (including VAT, sea freight and port charges). The price was higher than domestic alumina prices. Second, yuan’s depreciation weakened Chinese buyers’ purchasing power. Yuan weakened to 6.45 against the US dollar in November. Third, imported alumina stocks were piling up at Chinese ports after aggressive imports in October. Indonesian minerals miner Aneka Tambang has signed a memorandum of understanding with Aluminum Corporation of China to develop a smelter-grade alumina refinery in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, the company said in a statement late on Wednesday. Altech has received a letter of interest from the administrator of Germany’s export credit agency (ECA) confirming that the group would, in principle, support the project, which encompasses kaolin mining in Western Australia and a proposed HPA processing plant in Malaysia. The two firms will come together to set up a caustic soda plant at Dahej in Gujarat. Nalco CMD T K Chand on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of the proposed plant, a release here said.
